I never feel more like myself than when I’m wearing a great pair of jeans. I love the versatility, reliability, and authenticity of denim. Like my oldest friends, my favorite jeans are muchloved, hard-earned, and flattering just where and when I need them. And as much as I love summer, there comes a time every August when I start to crave my jeans and the crisp air that means I can wear them again. If you’re anything like me, you have an article of clothing you fantasize about owning—maybe even down to what you’d wear it with, the places you’d wear it to, how you’d feel in it. That piece for me is a long denim A-line skirt that buttons down the front, and I’d pair it with ’70s-style tan…

INDIE GO-GO Italian label Dondup continues to turn denim convention on its head with avant-garde creations that feel totally original. In fact, rebellion was the theme of its fall collection. Creative director and cofounder Manuela Mariotti, who, alongside her husband, built the once-obscure brand into one with a cult following, bucked the status quo with this look that’s accented by silver chains hanging from frayed holes. Want more? You’re in luck—the company has designs on opening a U.S. outpost soon. BLUE STATE To mark a decade of denim, Givenchy is bringing back iconic styles from seasons past. The pre-fall and resort collections featured numerous head-to-toe jean looks (ripped, faded, and leather-patched) that included signature shapes like the cape and structured jacket. The house’s trademark stars and studs covered everything from…
If you want a lesson in organization, ask those who travel often. Take Louis Vuitton, for example. In 1835, following his mother’s death, the then 13-year-old journeyed from his rural hometown of Anchay, France, to Paris on foot, a 292-mile trip, working odd jobs along the way to help get him there (it took him two years). Decades later, Napoleon III’s wife, Eugénie de Montijo, hired Vuitton—by that time an established craftsman—as her personal box maker and packer, which inspired him to launch his company. Industrial designer Marc Newson had an equally nomadic upbringing: He left Sydney at age 11 to travel the world for a year with his mother, and then studied in South Korea. But it wasn’t this similarity that prompted him to work with Vuitton again (they…
