Is it wrong to have just lukewarm feelings about the wholesome tale of a teen boy who miraculously survives an accident? John (Marcel Ruiz) and his friends are horsing around on a frozen lake in Missouri when disaster strikes. Despite a noble rescue, doctors declare him dead. Then his devoted mother, Joyce (Chrissy Metz, nicely cast), prays over his lifeless body and hears a pulse! (Although a true story, the moment is overly dramatized.) Joyce turns to a higher power again and again to help her son — and though her faith surely helped Joyce in real life, these scenes turn the nearly two-hour film into a repetitive, mawkish cryfest.
