Instead of his patented flash and brash, director Martin Scorsese delivers an effectively moving real-life portrait of the emotional toll that being at the top of the mob underworld takes. The title character is Frank Sheeran (Robert De Niro), a teamster who ends up as a middleman between Mafia don Russell Bufalino (Joe Pesci) and hot-headed union boss Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino). The film is epic in every sense, with top-shelf performances, a decades-spanning story and a challenging 209-minute run time.
