That’d have to be the dummy rear side windows. Most full camper conversions these days cover up at least one rear side window, so if you start with a factory glazed van, you then basically have to just block off a window. It’s not as bad now that everyone seems to run privacy glass, but in the past, it led to all sorts of dummy curtains to cover the contents of your wardrobe. I’ve even seen stick on bathroom glass frosting in the past (yes really!), so dummy glass on a van-based conversion seems like a better idea. Far from being a simple drop in mod, the Caravelle floor rails involve a few more parts than simply the rails themselves. You’ll need the reinforcing brackets and the specialist VW square drive bolts and nuts. The real skill of the conversion comes in cutting the ply floor to suit as the original Caravelle item is cut to account for the Caravelle plastic side panels. You’ll also have to remove a considerable amount of heat shields and drop the exhaust system / fuel tank to gain access where all of the bolts need to line up beneath. It’s one thing starting a conversion company and another thing converting one or two vans as a sideline. Tim has wisely decided to play to his strengths with the van you see here; he’s carried out all the work that his skillset allows while trusting other elements of the work to VanHaven, who’ve been around the block a time or two. Sure, he could have done the whole shebang himself, but he played to his strengths and saved time and energy by doing it this way. So, you need to find a company to do some work on your van? This scene of ours is packed with companies started off the back of a hobby, which is great in some respects, as it means the company owners are usually pretty passionate about what they do. The issues begin though when the skillset doesn’t match the passion. Anyone can create a professional-looking brand and website these days and put up a few carefully shot pictures on social media of vans they’ve done, but there’s no substitute for real reviews – forums, clubs and speaking to people at shows it the way to sort the wheat from the chaff.…

What’s that coming over the hill? Is it a Swamper? Is it a Swamper? The way things are going, the chances are improving that yes, it is actually a Swamper. For a start, here’s the second one we’ve brought to you in as many months. There’s nothing new about the idea. Lifted suspension and some chunky off-road tyres will see you negotiate your way safely into the category. What is something of a more recent trend is the concept that a Swamper doesn’t have to be a utilitarian van, purely built to handle the rough and tumble of green lanes and farmers fields. You can also enjoy a level of comfort and refinement not commonly associated with a swamp. We’re looking at a prime example of that fact right here…

One of the neatest mods to this Swamper is the airline rails mounted both inside, and outside the van. Providing almost endless possibilities of use, it’s the ultimate in versatility. Available in different lengths to suit your needs, they can be retrofitted anywhere you need ability to secure things down or to hang things up. Matt uses his mostly for hanging his wet, muddy gear after a hike or similar. He has also created an outdoor shower space by hooking a curtain around the rails on the tailgate. A genius idea!…
