Generally when we feature people in this magazine they have progressed from an older Transporter to a newer version because they have outgrown it, or it’s fallen apart. Not self-confessed petrolhead Huw Davies from Wales – he went in the other direction from a T6.1 back to this T4. “I’ve always lusted after an old school van, especially a coachbuilt one; I just like the retro look, the room they offer and the practicality of them,” he confirmed. I love and hate France and the French in equal measure. No, seriously, I love the country and (most of) the people. But the bureaucracy is just about doing my head in. I left you last time having swapped the original right-hand drive headlamps (with beam deflectors) on my T5.1 for pukka left-hand drive lamps in the hope that the powers that be would finally give me a piece of paper to enable me register it here in France where I live. I filled in a mahoosive online form, took the vehicle to the equivalent of a DVLA office nearby armed with the UK V5 and Certificate of Conformity from VW UK, and came away with even more question marks. Inspired by a heavy binge of Van Haven YouTube videos (their builds are next level), I decided to give my van a tougher, more rugged stance to reflect the places we love to explore and the kind of vanlife we live. Without any doubt Ray Roberts, a scaffolder from the Wirral, is something of a magician. Look at the exterior of his long wheelbase T5.1 of 2013 vintage and the van not only ticks the boxes of recent trends in van customisation but also is finished in a timeless shade of red, namely the curiously named option of Salsa (or LA3H for the pedantic). Ah, the simple life. It’s what we all crave, isn’t it? If we’re really honest? 2025 is a frighteningly complicated place to live. There’s a device in your pocket that pretends to be a telephone but in fact acts as a gateway to all of mankind’s information, thoughts, opinions and, er, pictures of cats. The TV has a lot more than four channels these days. We’re overwhelmed by choice, decisions, the crushing weight of complexity. The arms race to own the latest natty gizmo. The freshest way of reworking and digitising things that have happily existed in analogue form for generations. After successfully building a stack of VW campervans, Carl Turner wanted his follow up project to incorporate his favourite pastime too. Based on what was once a silver T5 Shuttle, this transformation into a fully kitted-out Swamper purpose built for carp fishing duties is impressive to say the least. “I’ve always been hands-on and like creating things that will prove useful,” Carl tells us, “I used those skills to help build up my fabrication business, Apex Mechanical”.
