Antarctica, the windiest and coldest continent on earth, is also the driest, with the interior receiving less rainfall than the deserts on Australia's mainland (see breakout). Despite the low precipitation, Antarctica holds a staggering ninety percent of the world's fresh water, locked up in ice. This abundance of ice gives the appearance explorers and adventurers have easy access to all the water they need, but the ice does not yield easily. Douglas Mawson, widely regarded as Australia's greatest Antarctic explorer, was already familiar with the icy conditions when, in 1911 and at 29 years of age, he sailed from Hobart in command of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition. Having already been to the Antarctic with Shackleton, he was offered, and declined, a place on Scott's expedition.
