Kids with Dyscalculia process math differently and it can affect every area of math differently. Some students can do things that others cannot. These are the basic issues that most kids with Dyscalculia have. This is definitely not exhaustive, but can give you a foundation to start with. Most students with Dyscalculia cannot estimate or infer. Students with Dyscalculia need a solid foundation in number sense before they can successfully move on to operations. Learning algorithms in math is very difficult for a student with Dyscalculia. They have trouble with spatial reasoning, mental imagery, and operation symbols. Anxiety is the root cause of Selective Mutism. And Selective Mutism is a mental illness. The child cannot control it. You cannot cure it. Your student's parents are your greatest resource. I have a form included in this PDF for a parent of a child with SM to fill out. The parent can give you an idea of how much the child speaks (if at all) and other triggers of anxiety. The goal is to make the student feel safe in your classroom. Many children with SM need structure and consistency - they need to know what is going to happen and when. If possible have the student take a math assessment test at the beginning of the year or view their latest statewide testing scores and get a sense of where they need help most. Students will need a lot of time to develop core number sense. They will also need short lessons - especially if they get outwardly frustrated. Never move on unless the student has mastered the previous level. Do easiest math tasks repeatedly it is important for their brain to keep the basics "stuck" inside. Realize these students have a real disorder that they cannot help. By the time they start Middle School, whatever math knowledge they have is basically as far as it will go.
