‘D iane De Zoysa is being dubbed the “British Shirley Valentine”. She is a 59-year-old woman who went on holiday to Sri Lanka, had a wild, passionate time with a 26-yearold local boy called Priyanjana, fell in love, went home, sold her house, gave up her job, moved there and married him.
But, possibly predictably, it didn’t work out. He changed, turned nasty and spurned her sexually. Now he’s dead, and she’s stuck there unable to get home, because she’s penniless after – surprise surprise – handing over £100,000 of her savings to his family.
You have to agree it’s a pretty sad story.
