I was 13 years old when World War II broke out and was living in a rented flat in Clapham, south west London, with my parents and sister. When the Blitz started, most of the children were evacuated with their schools, but my mother and father (who worked as an air-raid warden) didn’t wish to separate our family, for which I was grateful.
