As we note in the introduction to this issue’s cover story (page 32), life is far stranger than we ever imagined.
It’s also not always fair, a fact of life that philosophers — and many a parent — have observed over the centuries. Too often, this is especially true when it comes to getting the recognition one deserves, seeing hard or original work go unrewarded, or witnessing the tragedy of brilliance ended too soon, whether by chance or misadventure.
I like to think that part of Discover’s mission is to shed light on little-known and unsung heroes of science, past and present, in the stories that we bring to you.
