The world of soap is in mourning for two much-loved actors who made significant contributions to the genre. Derek Martin, best known as EastEnders’ Charlie Slater, passed away at the age of 92. The star, who had a career spanning over 50 years, joined the cast in 2000 when the Slater clan crashed into Walford, instantly becoming one of the show’s most iconic families. Derek remained a regular member of the cast until 2011, but returned for several guest stints and made his last appearance in 2016 when Charlie died in the arms of his heartbroken daughter, Kat. “Derek was deeply loved by all who worked with him and will always be remembered with great fondness,” said a spokesperson.
