When David Flack launched his eponymous studio in late 2014 he also introduced the world to some new words. ‘Flackify’, according to the Melbourne-based interior designer, is a verb he uses – meaning ‘to transform a space into an experience’. And if there’s anyone who knows a thing or two about that, it’s Flack, who’s quickly built a reputation for delivering high- end hospitality, retail and residential projects of strikingly lush colour and strong materiality. “We’re not serving up beige spaces,” he says. “It’s about challenging myself and the client and also challenging people in general about what design actually is.” Flack approaches every project in the same way to maintain consistent rigour across each of the studio’s portfolios. The robots are among us – and we had better get used to it. That was the message at the 2017 CoreNet Symposium, held in Auckland’s Shed 10 on 18 May. The topic this year was ‘Humanity and the Machine: Where are we going?’, and the speakers wowed delegates with information about technology and how it relates to the workforce, namely who or what we can expect to be working with in the very near future. “TIMBERS on acid” is how Rachel O’Malley and Mike Petre describe the restaurant and brewery they designed in Matakana. And that, it is. Its interior includes, among several others: Old Man Pine, Birch, Japanese Cedar, Totara, Macrocarpa, Beech, and Pohutukawa. They are all used in a variety of ways ranging from furniture and structural through to cladding and finishes. In many instances, saw marks are visible on the surfaces as a sort of physical representation of the name of the beer brewed here (Sawmill). On others, there are stains and accidental patinas. FOR SOME in the building industry, the image of the architect is one who sketches out a building, then sends it out into the world to be realised, without much thought for how this might happen. Dave Strachan is turning this idea on its head with his own team at Strachan Group Architects (SGA), via the creation of his new offices, which combine architecture office with workshop, landscaping and fabrication businesses – all in one cohesive home. With its rustic wood finish and local flavour, the Paddle Stool by ÃKAU was an apt choice for casual seating in the Sawmill Brewery & Smoko Room. Born out of a workshop by Far North design and architecture company ÃKAU, the stool is based on the traditional hoe, or paddle, used on waka. “We are a design and architecture company, but we’re also a social enterprise with a charitable trust,” explains co-founder Ana Heremia. “We run youth programmes and get young people involved in the design of projects in the community. What I am reading: The Case for Creativity by James Hurman. This book is literally just too ‘on the mark’. James (a Kiwi!) explores the relationship between imagination and effectiveness in advertising projects – with the outcome that wild creativity sells hard. Having just come out of a white tile epidemic, this has been the perfect motivational kick for me to push beyond the bore, keeping tight focus on unique and remarkable ideas. What I’m not reading: Less and More by Dieter Rams. Minimalism is the absolute drain of life. Even the cover sucks my soul dry. The initial construction of the SGA studio began with a concrete, steel and timber-framed shell, which was skinned in structural plywood, then fitted with a façade of rain screening and concrete. The plywood continues through the interior in a seamless manner, with custom-designed and in-house built Birch plywood cabinetry and panelling that spans across the walls and ceiling. The fit-out was modelled with 3D software and, where necessary, sent to CNC cutters to be cut and bent into shape. The pre-cut components were then brought back to the studio and assembled on site by the SGA team, along with builders from Crate Innovation. Instead of requiring welded connections, the fabrication methods meant that most of the building could be done with minimal tools, using tab-and-slot assembly. Holes were pre-drilled in…
