When it comes to adventure-style sports-tourers for those wanting the smooth strength of a four-cylinder engine, the choice has been simple for some time: Kawasaki’s Z1000-derived Versys, originally launched at under £10k, remains the bargain budget option; BMW’s slick and potent S1000R-derived S1000XR is for high-end performance junkies; while Honda’s VFR1200-based Crosstourer V4, priced from £11,500 up to a £14k for the DCT option, sits in-between. And that’s your lot.
But with Kawasaki’s sizeable overhaul of the Versys for 2019 and, even more significantly, the addition of an up-specced SE version, with electronic suspension, TFT dash, improved electronics, a catalogue-full of accessories plus a price starting at over £15k, that choice is no longer so clear.
