You’d be forgiven for thinking that, with the demise of Moto Guzzi’s California 1400 (in 2020) and Triumph’s Thunderbird 1700 LT (in 2018), Harley and Indian were ‘last men standing’ in the ‘bagger’ category.
But that’d be overlooking BMW’s R18 family. Introduced with the ‘First Edition’ cruiser in 2020, joined by the Classic, B ‘bagger’ and Transcontinental ‘full-dresser’ in 2021, and high-barred ‘Roctane’ in 2023, all were based around a new, air-cooled, 1802cc, 90bhp boxer twin and blended BMW heritage style with cruiser curves.
All perform competitively, handle and have lovely details and build quality served with added cheese (the two riding modes, for example, are called not Sport and Road but Rock and Roll).
