BETWEEN 1974 and 1979, identical twins Kehinde and Taiwo Lijadu, cousins of Fela Kuti, released five albums of pared-down African funk, among the few Nigerian albums of the time to give top billing to women. “The guys viewed us as competition – which we were,” Kehinde, who died in 2019, told me in 2012, the last time these were available. “We gave them a run for their money until, eventually, they gave up.” Perhaps, then, it was jealousy that has made even reissues so hard to find, for Horizon Unlimited is a cracking album.
