My typical week… If I’m working, no two days are the same! FOOD FOR THOUGHT British researchers may have confirmed suspicions that solids can help baby sleep. The study randomised just over 1300 mother-baby pairs to exclusively breastfeed for six months or to introduce solids starting at three months, while continuing to breastfeed. Babies who’d been given solid food early were sleeping 17 minutes longer per night – about two hours of extra sleep a week – and woke 9.1% fewer times than exclusively breast-fed babies. Why do you like travelling by yourself? When you’re by yourself you will meet people. A pop-up exhibition at Te Papa explores the fight for gender equality, part of wider Suffrage 125 events around New Zealand. Breakouts aren’t just for teenagers, with hormonal acne affecting all ages. Fluctuating hormones can increase sebum production, resulting in clogged pores that cause breakouts. The crusade to close the gender pay gap appears to be succeeding – currently, it’s the second smallest gap it’s been, at 9.2%, since records began 20 years ago, down two per cent from last year. And it’s thanks to companies like AECOM who are taking a closer look at their numbers. When the engineering consultancy company found out they had a pay gap, Philippa Green – senior HR business partner at the firm – made it a company-wide priority to close the gap. BRCA1 and BRCA2 are human genes inherited from a person’s mother or father which help to repair damaged DNA and play a key role in ensuring the stability of each cell’s genetic material. When either of these genes is mutated or altered, cells are more likely to develop additional genetic alterations that can lead to cancer. While around 12% of women in the general population will develop breast cancer sometime during their lives, a 2017 study showed around 72% of women who inherit a BRCA1 mutation, and around 69% of women who inherit a BRCA2 mutation, will develop breast cancer by the age of 80. Entomologists will tell you that certain species become endemic to an area when they are restricted to it by reason of geological upheavals, lack of a land bridge or laziness.
