On Nov. 1 The Real cohost was hospitalized when doctors discovered a rare, potentially life-threatening abscess in her throat that made breathing difficult. “My sore throat turned out to be a strep throat that quickly turned into a parapharyngeal abscess,” says Mai, 41, who was diagnosed with epiglottitis. “I was breathing like Darth Vader.” The talk show host underwent surgery to successfully remove the abscess, which was blocking her airway.
