Why won’t antisemitism die, or at least die down? In the months following Hamas’ attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, antisemitic incidents increased substantially. The Anti-Defamation League, which keeps track, says they tripled in the U.S. over the previous year, although its criteria also changed to include anti-Zionism. But from 2019 to 2022, the amount of people with highly antisemitic attitudes in the U.S. had nearly doubled, the ADL found. It’s been three years since Myanmar’s ruling junta clawed back power from an elected government, and its grip on power is becoming costlier for all concerned. Recent fights with well-armed ethnic groups have inflicted heavy casualties on the country’s military. The Defense Ministry admitted in March 2023 that 14,000 troops had deserted since the coup. The true number was surely higher then and is much higher now. Add the army’s broad unpopularity to public fears that troops have become cannon fodder, and recruiting isn’t going well either. Nadia Murad dreamed of running her own beauty salon in Kojo, a small farming village in northern Iraq. “In my imagination, the salon was a safe space where women and girls could share ideas, learn things, and have something for themselves,” she says. That dream was torn away when Islamic State fighters invaded her village in 2014, intent on destroying a Yazidi community they called infidels.
