I was watching a few guys ride the other day and was blown away by their flexibility off the wake. Some of the wiry-leg guys like Adam Errington and Massi Piffaretti bend in the craziest ways, and if you watch someone like Josh Twelker or Trever Maur, they’re constantly tweaking in positions that look uncomfortable just to look at. The range of motion for someone’s legs isn’t something I’m necessarily an expert at, and although some of these guys’ flexibility depends on genetics and body type, there is one way that anyone off the street can get better at that stuff. The Italian shown on our cover this month has been racking up the media coverage as of late, mostly due to his knack for taking compelling photos. Massimiliano Piffaretti (or Massi Piffa, if you’re into the whole brevity thing) is a rare talent. He’s got insane style; his ability to tweak and poke on his wakeboard is pretty unheard of; and his arsenal of tech tricks is pretty strong to boot. When photographer Bryan Soderlind sent us a slew of potential photos of Massi for this month’s cover image, we literally had a half-dozen mock-ups of covers that were all contenders. Photographer Thomas Gustafson is very similar in our magazine’s office to a migratory bird. He appears out of thin air in early to midautumn, bearing gifts from Ikea, and works his ass off for three to four months producing amazing images, and then vanishes from the area — not to return until the following year. A close friend, Jeff House has always been one of my favorite guys to watch ride a wakeboard. He has an unmatched smooth style, a purpose behind every trick he does and, in my opinion, the best Pete Rose in the sport. I’ve always found it a treat to watch him ride, mostly because since I’ve known him, it has been somewhat of a rare occurrence.
