Since my very first sportive, the 2005 edition of the legendary La Marmotte in the Alps, I’ve been employing my wellhoned sportive strategy. It’s somewhat rudimentary and goes something like this: start hard, find a group of strong riders, sit in their wheels, race through feed stations like a Formula 1 car negotiating the pits, share the pace, use their legs and wring them dry until something gives, ideally close to the finish line. Pain is temporary, I repeat to myself, but Strava Kudos are permanent. TO THE NAKED EYE, THE NEW SMITH Persist helmet looks largely unchanged from the 2022 model. Both feature 21 vents, Smith’s AirVac and VaporFit systems – the former a ventilation system designed to fit with Smith sunglasses for fog-free riding, the latter an adjustment dial for it - and MIPS, the industry-leading tech that reduces rotational forces to the head from angled impacts. Dig a little deeper, though, and there’s an additional nod to safety in the shape of the Zonal Koroyd. They’ve proven comfortable, practical and versatile – and easy to clean after muddy winter rides. The sole’s pattern of TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane – a tough, abrasion-resistant plastic) lugs worked well on a variety of surfaces, including more grip than we expected on mud, yet they remain stiff and supportive enough when cycling. I still don’t really know if I like cycling. I hope that in saying this that I have enough credit with the editorial team at Cycling Plus, my long-standing employers to whom I am very grateful, not to be instantly dismissed for going woefully off message with this latest column. Never stop adventuring. That’s always been my approach to training rides. Yes, I might have certain efforts to do in training, but I still want to ride to new places and to see new or interesting things. I really enjoy that sense of exploring. It’s the reason why I fell in love with this sport to start with. When you’re younger, you know you can travel so much further away from home on a bike than if you are just walking. And that feeling of exploration is something I’ve never lost. Trying new routes on my training rides keeps things fresh. The idea of Cycling Plus creating its own awards night was first floated a year ago. I’ll admit, I took some convincing. How would we stand out from the existing cycling awards? Slower traffic speeds may have become a political football in the autumn, when Rishi Sunak declared his politically-driven war on safer streets, but that has so far changed very little on the ground. What’s more, despite claims from 10 Downing Street that 20mph speed limits are not in accordance with British values, voters seem to disagree. In September, the Welsh Senedd introduced default 20mph speed limits on formerly 30mph roads: places people walk and cycle the most, and where a substantial proportion of collisions take place. While the move received significant negative media coverage, and sparked a culture war, with the Government inaccurately labelling it a ‘blanket 20mph zone’, we know slower traffic speeds where people walk and cycle are generally popular – and they save lives. Reach ● The horizontal distance between the centre of the bottom bracket to the centre of the head-tube. A longer reach lowers your ride position into a racier position, a shorter reach means you sit more upright, which gives more comfort over long distances. Stack ● The vertical distance between the top of the head-tube to the centre of the bottom bracket. Taller stack means a more upright ride position; lower stack means a lower (racier) position. Trail ● The trail figure is derived from a combination of the head-tube angle and the fork offset, and shows how far the tyre’s contact point ‘trails’ behind the steering axis. CHRIS KING, THE LEGENDARY builders of bicycle hubs, now make complete wheelsets, with a welcome ecofriendlier twist. Instead of using a traditional, full carbon fibre rim held together with epoxy resin, the ARD44 rim is made from a novel blend of carbon fibres and nylon, without the epoxy. This means it’s fully recyclable. It also uses less energy to produce, since traditional carbon fibre must be kept refrigerated whereas FusionFiber can be kept at room temperature, and it takes less oven time to cure.
