Widening pay gap for mums is ‘unacceptable in Britain’ THE GENDER PAY GAP is news to none of you. When we launched our Mind the Pay Gap campaign back in 2014, we knew it would be a long battle. But we made progress, and celebrated having helped to change the law in 2015, the final stages of which will roll out in October and take effect next April. However, new research has laid bare a new gap, showing just how great a financial penalty women pay when they have children. In other pay gap news, Hollywood’s gender disparity lives on, as last week Forbes magazine’s annual highest-paid-actor list showed that leading ladies are still lagging way behind their male peers. Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, topped the men with £49m, earning nearly £15m more than Jennifer Lawrence, the top woman with £35m. And the disturbing trend continues: second and third of the men – Jackie Chan (£46m) and Matt Damon (£42m) – had almost double the earning power of their female counterparts, Melissa McCarthy (£25m) and Scarlett Johansson (£19m).
