CREATING THIS ISSUE has never been more relevant for me. I’m currently knee-deep in my own kitchen and bathroom renovations. Between editing stories for this magazine, I’ve been fielding calls from my contractor about grout colours for tiles, paint shades for walls and wood finishes for my kitchen cabinets. It seems, no matter how much you decide in advance, there are always last-minute decisions that need immediate action. Luckily, I’m not alone in my reno bubble. I have numerous friends who are in the throes of their own projects, and we exchange daily texts about the highs and lows. The question we debate the most? Whether or not something is too trendy. Snow Colbeck and her husband had long been dreaming of a renovation that would transform the heart of their home into a welcoming space that was perfect for entertaining and had plenty of storage to boot. But not Chris Beech and Erin Svara. The Toronto couple looked further afield for inspiration when it came to revamping their suburban ’50s kitchen in the East York area. DESIGNER: FEASBY & BLEEKS DESIGN TIMELINE: 6 MONTHS LOCATION: BURLINGTON, ONT. THE VISION: A luxurious ensuite with a large walk-in shower EVERYONE HAS a different take on luxury. For one couple in Burlington, it’s a Parisian hotel. With images of grand, spacious bathrooms in mind, principal designer Erin Feasby of Feasby & Bleeks Design got to work designing this 200-square-foot ensuite bathroom and closet. The homeowners gave Erin free rein during the design process. “The ensuite wasn’t offensive, but it was obviously dated,” says Erin. “It had Hollywood lighting, drop-in sinks and a typical walk-in closet.” It also had a wonky floor plan: one door next to the bed opened to a bland walk-in closet, and a stark and empty hallway led to the ensuite bathroom.
