Mary Rose Launched: July 1511 Sank: 19 July 1545 The Mary Rose was Henry VIII’s most famous flagship, sailing the waters for 34 years before it was tragically sunk during the Battle of the Solent against the French in 1545. In 1982, it was finally raised from the seabed and can now be seen in the Mary Rose Museum, based in the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. Blood-curdling screams could be heard for miles around the Solent as Henry VIII’s favourite warship, the Mary Rose, began to sink. The men on board desperately tried to clamber upwards to avoid the water as it burst through the hull, hoping that they could save themselves. But more tragedy awaited them as the heavy netting that covered the entire upper deck, designed to protect the…
How do you explain to your parents what you are doing with your life? After I graduated in 2012, I was selling electricity contracts to large organizations, living in Queens, and commuting daily down to the end of Manhattan. That was making a portion of my family very happy, but I was miserable. In school I had done a research project on “How do we decarbonize the supply chain and support local economies?” Instead of big factories making millions of a single item in small towns, I thought there should be a way to manufacture millions of different objects locally, one or two at a time. Then a portion of what we buy would be made locally and some of that money could stay in the community. While living in…
Poo anxiety, bashful bowels, shy bowel syndrome: they’re all terms for what’s medically known as parcopresis or difficulty pooping when you’re not at home. The Germans have given it a name heimscheißer (pronounced “heimscheisser”), which means “home shitter.” Sufferers experience distress and anxiety at the mere thought of having to use a toilet at school, work or any public place. Some may even find it hard to poop while on holidays. If forced to use a toilet away from home, sufferers might experience a racing heartbeat, excess sweating, nausea, tremors and difficulty passing a bowel movement. Poo anxiety sufferers will sometimes eat less food or even avoid certain social activities that might expose them to needing to use a public toilet. How common is it? Poo anxiety seems to be…
Cyclamen ‘Illusia’ This new variety of cyclamen will capture your attention immediately! Absolutely stunning petticoat flowers cover pretty leaves in Cyclamen persicum ‘llusia’. Just launched and with several international awards to its name, these will be an excellent gift for anyone, including oneself. They thrive in cool, humid, bright indirect light. Avoid direct sun, which will scorch the leaves. To care for them, make sure they get enough water. The soil must be moist but not soggy. Water from the base when the soil is partially dry. This prevents the leaves from getting wet, which can invite pests or cause crown rot in the plants. If the leaves start to yellow, it may be a sign of too much or too little water. The plants will be dormant in summer,…
Ten years ago Christine Marie, an expert in cult psychology, and her music video producer husband, Tolga Katas, drove from their home in Las Vegas to the remote community of Colorado City, Ariz., on an extraordinary mission: to live among, and eventually befriend, members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (FLDS) who have made the stunningly beautiful mountain landscape on the Arizona-Utah border their home for nearly a century. At the time, the cultlike group—known for its practice of illegal plural marriage, or polygamy—was in disarray. Its leader, self-described prophet Warren Jeffs, and several male followers were in prison for having sex with underage “wives.” The State of Utah was in the process of seizing FLDS-owned property and evicting families who had lived there for generations.…

Up for a challenge? This project provides a chance to try a new joinery technique and to work with materials other than wood, all without investing a lot of time or money. The frame for the Danish Modern cube calls for cutting intersecting mortises in the legs. To do this, we used a hollow-chisel mortiser, but you can easily create them using a drill press and a hand chisel. Then you’ll cut tenons on the ends of the stretchers and miter them to fit inside the intersecting mortises. To make the sling, you’ll cut, punch, and rivet a piece of leather that’s supported by two steel rods. Never worked with leather? We’ll show you how. CUT THE FRAME JOINERY When cutting the mortises in the legs, you’ll need to create…
In this guide, we’re counting off the best cameras under £500, and that can be a trickier ask than you might expect. Cheap cameras aren’t as common as they used to be, the market having been somewhat decimated by the rise of the smartphone, and people’s expectations for a camera at this price have changed accordingly. Now, in order for a camera to justify a cost of £500, it has to offer something a smartphone doesn’t, whether that’s superior image quality, a broad lens range, or extra physical features like waterproofing. And no, these features are not just reserved for the top cameras for photography. As such, we’re not just counting off cheapo bargain cameras here – we’re looking at some of the best compact cameras you can buy, and…
YOU WOULD BE WELL ADVISED to avoid the Narcisse Snake Dens of Manitoba, Canada, if you have a phobia of snakes. The name gives it away. This wildlife reserve is the winter habitat of tens of thousands of red-sided garter snakes. These snakes are widespread across the northern USA and southern Canada. As winter approaches, they slither off to find a place to hunker down and hibernate. The Narcisse Snake Dens, in the rural municipality of Armstrong, are a mixture of grassland and forest, covering a limestone bedrock. Over millions of years, water has seeped into the porous limestone, carving out deep crevices and caverns. In winter, when above-ground temperatures routinely fall to –30°C, inside these sinkholes it never drops below freezing. The snakes start moving into the dens in…
ACCOMMODATIONS HOTEL OF THE YEAR THE JUNTO Columbus, Ohio Our cover star, The Junto, is that rare breed: a boutique hotel that really earns the name, with no big chain affiliations. Since opening in 2023, the property has become a true community hangout in Columbus’ Franklinton neighborhood. (It’s not uncommon to see locals coworking in the plush lobby.) Named after Benjamin Franklin’s club for mutual improvement, the 198-room hotel encourages gatherings in four distinct venues: wood-hearth dining at Little West Tavern, rooftop cocktails at Brass Eye, coffee at Maudine’s, and fireside conversation in The Trade Room’s inviting nooks. (There are also plenty of formal meeting spaces.) And the pleasures keep rolling: guest rooms with oversize window seats and Scioto River views; a Gear Garage with bikes, kayaks, and skateboards for…
EVERYBODY KNOWS HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT. Eat less, move more, buy new jeans. What could be simpler? Except it’s not really that easy. For one thing, weight loss isn’t linear. The more you lose, the more your body fights back by slowing your metabolism and increasing your hunger. ▪ That’s why so many diets that start as New Year’s resolutions are long forgotten by the time Oktoberfest rolls around. Logically, there’s no reason why a diet should end with a single slip-up. What’s the worst that can happen? It sets you back a day or two. If your goal is permanent weight loss, what you do six days a week should matter more than what happens on the seventh. ▪ In fact, some in the field suggest that a good…
Shares in Meta and Alphabet plunged last week after a landmark legal case found that social-media platforms are designed to be addictive to children, say Stephen Morris and Hannah Murphy in the Financial Times. A jury in Los Angeles awarded $6m in damages to a 20-year-old plaintiff who claimed that a social-media addiction during childhood, the result of the way YouTube and Facebook were deliberately designed, harmed her mental health. The verdict comes after a jury in New Mexico ordered Meta to pay $375m in civil penalties for not adequately shielding children from sexual content. The “schadenfreude” of Meta and other social media firms having to pay damages will be “overwhelming” to many people, says The Wall Street Journal. But using a “novel product liability theory to shake down companies…

Developer/publisher Grasshopper Manufacture Format PC (tested), PS5, Xbox Series Release Out now Every game establishes a contract with its players at the start – the terms of agreement as to the tone, genre and quality you can expect. In Romeo Is A Dead Man, that begins at the title screen, where a miniature solar system floats inside a fishtank. A large, inanimate carp slowly warps from one side to the other, and an offbeat Japanese rap tune tumbles along. The hotchpotch continues in a delirious opening that revels in sci-fi buffoonery. There’s no doubt about what you’re signing up for: an absurdist fantasy that intentionally resists coherence. The universe has been fragmented thanks to a clash of singularities in the town of Deadford. Our hero, state trooper Romeo Stargazer, relates…
Cruising at 7,500 feet, I gaze below at the Chisos Mountain Range of Big Bend National Park in West Texas. Its twists and turns, dry rivers, and crispy vegetation make me wonder how any form of life can survive in such a desolate and unforgiving landscape. I’m also thankful to have a Garmin inReach and Spot within arms reach. But the hum of the Cirrus SR20’s Lycoming IO-390 puts me at ease. With a magazine deadline rapidly approaching, I am taking the precious two hours of flight time back from the Lajitas International Airport to begin telling this story, allowing my friend to have her first official flight lesson with my CFII, as I eagerly type away on my laptop in the back seat. Feeling inspired by the muted desert…
ANYONE who has witnessed hounds working a trail or a gundog emerging from brambles triumphant in its retrieve will have an inkling of how impressive a dog’s scenting ability is. A brief delve into the science reveals their power is not to be sniffed at. With up to 300 million olfactory receptors compared with a human’s six million, their sense of smell is around 100,000 times stronger. So it’s no wonder that, despite advances in technology, canines still prove to be invaluable in the sensitive and specialist work of conservation. Their employment is wide-ranging. Many projects involve finding rare species requiring protection or invasive ones warranting removal. Others need help identifying habitats in need of specialist management or evidence of environmental pollutants. Simon Chapman from K9 Manhunt & Scentwork Scotland…
Astrobiologists have proposed that NASA’s historic Viking missions may have detected signs of life on Mars in 1976, only for a key chemical signal to be mistakenly written off as terrestrial contamination. The provocative claim, published in the journal Astrobiology, hinges on a misreading of Martian soil chemistry and reignites debate as the search for life accelerates with new missions. The Viking landers carried four biology experiments designed to detect microbial metabolism in Martian soil. Two produced results that some researchers interpret as consistent with living organisms reacting to added nutrients. However, the Viking team concluded that the results were abiotic, after the onboard Gas Chromatograph–Mass Spectrometer (GC–MS) failed to detect organic molecules. The debate shifted dramatically in 2008, when NASA’s Phoenix lander discovered perchlorate salts in Martian soil. Perchlorates…
Increasingly, our phones carry a huge amount of personal information we need to keep secure, from banking apps to contacts to health data. Research by NowSecure (fave.co/47AXAQW) in 2025 found that around 70 percent of Android apps accessed both sensitive data and tracking domains, while more than 60 percent requested permissions such as location, camera, or microphone. Android’s multi-layered security model is supported by privacy controls that users can review and adjust. Some inbuilt features, such as background scanning, are enabled to improve the user experience but can also result in increased background data activity. There are multiple such settings that you can tweak if they aren’t necessary for you to use your device the way you want. To keep your phone as secure as possible, check the following Android…
In the days after the US and Israel first bombed Iran, financial markets bet that the economic fallout from Donald Trump’s “little excursion” in the Middle East would be short-lived. “There are risks from higher oil prices longer term. But this is a tail risk,” one US-based fund manager said after the airstrike that killed Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. “History has shown time and time again that geopolitical flare-ups like this tend to be short-lived. This one should prove to be no exception.” Weeks later, the prospect of a drawn-out war is causing mounting economic problems. Oil prices have soared above $100 a barrel, European gas prices have doubled, volatility stalks financial markets, and consumers worldwide are bracing for a surge in living costs. “Market wisdom still holds…
Chuck Norris wasn’t just a master of martial arts and an action-movie star. He was also a ubiquitous, hilarious meme. His tough-guy persona—cultivated in films like Missing in Action and on TV’s Walker, Texas Ranger—became so ingrained in pop culture, fans paired outrageous claims with photos of the rugged macho man. For one: “Chuck Norris built the hospital he was born in.” Norris sometimes got in on the joke. On March 10, his 86th birthday, he posted an Instagram video of himself punching a sparring partner—then declaring: “I don’t age. I level up.” ‘I’M A PEOPLE’S ACTOR, NOT A CRITIC’S ACTOR, AND I ALWAYS HAVE BEEN’ Ultimately Norris proved to be mortal after all. He died “at peace” and surrounded by loved ones on March 19, his family said in…
Getting crafty Canada logged 33,836 new boat sales in 2024. This included: SOURCE: NATIONAL MARINE MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION CANADA No.1 Fix the little cracks before they become big cracks “A gelcoat crack is just cosmetic…until it isn’t. Little cracks will eventually turn into big cracks. Cracks are especially problematic when it comes to horizontal surfaces, like on your deck. Unless it really is just a hairline crack, I recommend grinding it out with a rotary tool and filling it to prevent water from getting into the underlying laminate and fibreglass. Once you have water getting into the fibreglass, you’ll start getting structural problems, such as delamination; fibreglass is made of many layers, like a lasagna. Delamination is where the fibreglass separates from the core material. And once water gets into that…
He was rousingly handsome. They all were. Tall, with thick, dark hair, and the sort of winsome, fetching smiles that signalled big appetites for life. They had degrees in compelling subjects, and the kinds of curious careers that made me want to ask, how did you go from studying astronomy to being a helicopter medic? You’re a teacher and a stand-in for an (extremely famous) athlete on the side? Most importantly, they were all interested in me – the pings and roses and typed hellos of dating apps told me so. They planned dates, then followed through (if you’re wondering if that’s common dating behaviour nowadays, I assure you it is not). There was just one unexpected problem. These lovely, eligible men were young – the oldest of them 31…
For decades, asset safety was defined by labels. Inflation stayed stable. Large markets like U.S. Treasuries remained liquid in stress. Diversification worked because bonds typically rose when equities fell. Political and operational access was treated as secondary. That logic weakened as several pressures hit at once. Inflation became a source of real loss for nominal safe assets, and policy uncertainty began to show up in term premia. Liquidity proved state-dependent, with dealer capacity and leveraged positioning amplifying stress when investors tried to exit. Correlations changed due to inflationary pressures, so bonds and equities could fall together, and balanced portfolios offered less protection. Geopolitics then made market access a material risk. Sanctions, asset freezes, investment screening, and payment restrictions showed that ownership does not guarantee usability. Investors are responding by replacing…
Like any good fairytale, JESSIE CHORLEY’S story starts in a small cottage at the bottom of a valley, a traditional Welsh miner’s slate cottage at the foot of Mount Snowdon in Northern Wales where she and her brother were home-schooled by their mother, well-known textile artist Primmy Chorley. “My mom was and is a brave woman. I can only say that now that I am older. The choices she made and how she brought us up are how I feel about making my artwork. Her work and her small family have always been at the centre of her life. She lives a simple off-grid life where she gave me and my brother an intense rural childhood with art, cooking, growing our food and making things at its heart. I understand…

We recently announced the winners of the HONOR Night Photographer of the Year competition, a unique night and low-light photo contest organised in partnership with the major smartphone maker and AI pioneer. The overall winner was Ming Cheng from London, who attended the recent MWC mobile phone show in Barcelona as part of his prize (as well as getting to keep the flagship HONOR Magic8 Pro handset that was sent to him during the shortlisting process). In addition to visiting the show, Ming had plenty of time to enjoy Barcelona, and used the opportunity to take some more memorable pictures with the Magic8 Pro. Here, he shares more of his impressions of the phone. Powerful yet unobtrusive ‘I have been to Barcelona before, but discover new things each time, and…
Along with robins and trillium, another sure sign of spring is a sighting of that first bicycle that comes plodding up the road, propelled perhaps by one who owns a pair of snowshoes and cross-country skis more as outdoor window dressing than anything bordering on true winter enthusiasm. But when the snow finally recedes and the pavement finally dries, bicycles will emerge as surely as the false hellebores, and blood will be pumped into human extremities that haven’t seen a decent wave of corpuscles since October. So those looking for a short shakedown cruise to get the bicycling muscles working again, or for those wishing to enjoy one of the Adirondacks’ finest rites of spring, I offer a 10-mile loop with no aggressive climbs along a stretch of Lake Champlain…
JUST OVER 40 YEARS AGO, in his novel Contact, astronomer Carl Sagan imagined what it would be like to detect radio signals beamed from other intelligent lifeforms in the galaxy. In the story, these extraterrestrial beings send blueprints to build a spaceship to carry a handful of Earth travelers to meet with them. While the book lies firmly in the realm of science fiction, Sagan’s expertise gave it a rare level of technical realism, offering a plausible sequence of events in which astronomers identify a radio signal of alien origin. Yet after a century of listening, we are still alone in the vast cosmos — though that has not killed the hope that radio telescopes could open a line of communication to alien civilizations. In fact, we have barely begun…
Comments Timothée Chalamet made during a Feb. 24 Variety and CNN town hall may have a lasting impact on him after going viral earlier this month. Chalamet—who was a front-runner for this year’s best actor Oscar for his role as Ping-Pong prodigy Marty Mauser in Marty Supreme—joined Matthew McConaughey for a conversation at the University of Texas at Austin, where he discussed waning movie theater attendance and its potential effect on actors. “I don’t want to be working in ballet or opera or, you know, things where it’s like, ‘Hey, keep this thing alive,’ even though it’s like, no one cares about this anymore,” Chalamet said. He quickly tried to do a bit of off-the-cuff damage control. “All respect to the ballet and opera people out there,” he added, and…
For the first time in six years, Harvey Weinstein is speaking out from behind bars. “I don’t want to die in here,” the disgraced film producer, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2024, told The Hollywood Reporter from Rikers Island in a Q&A published on March 10. Weinstein, 74, shared that he spends 23 hours a day in his cell because he’s “constantly threatened” by other inmates and “wouldn’t last long” in general population. He described daily phone calls to three of his five children (two no longer speak to him) as his “lifeline,” noting that he also stays busy reading books and watching movies. This leaves the convicted rapist with plenty of time for introspection, as he noted, “I think endlessly about what I would do differently if I…
At first glance, recent reports that OpenAI leadership is urging the company to “focus” sound like routine corporate housekeeping. As The Wall Street Journal described it, executives at an internal all-hands meeting emphasized urgency, discipline, and narrowing priorities. That could easily be framed as a standard scaling challenge: a fast-growing company tightening operations. But step back, and the tone suggests something larger at play. The message was not just about product refinement. It was about alignment, execution speed, and strategic clarity. In Silicon Valley language, that often signals preparation for a defining corporate event. In OpenAI’s case, the subtext increasingly points toward positioning for a public offering — or at least building the structure that makes one possible. This is not merely an internal reorganization. It may be the opening…

THEN HE HAD TO MAKE IT OUT ALIVE. THIS IS HIS STORY. DON’T BE A SILENT LAMB. ONLY BE A WOLF WITH FANGS. ORDINARY PEOPLE CREATE MIRACLES AND BREAK THROUGH DREAMS. IT WAS A perfect June eveningin New York when I received my first email from the source who would ask me to call him Red Bull. He was writing from hell, 8,000 miles away. A summer shower had left a rainbow over my Brooklyn neighborhood, and my two children were playing in a kiddie pool on the roof of our apartment building. Now the sun was setting, while I—in typical 21st-century parenting fashion, forgive me—compulsively scrolled through every app on my phone. The message had no subject line and came from an address on the encrypted email service Proton…
From the new social media ban for under 16s to the evolution of AI, our relationship with technology keeps changing. However for many parents, getting their kids to spend less time on devices still feels like an uphill battle. If you’re trying to reduce your kids’ screen time, researcher and digital wellbeing expert Dr Jo Orlando says it’s important to approach these conversations with empathy. “Imagine a 10-year-old on a group chat. It’s not just a group chat to them, it’s their whole social world,” she explains. “The conversation will continue without them – the inside jokes will continue, plans will be finalised. So for them it’s not just about a chat, it’s about belonging.” UNDERSTAND THEIR FEELINGS Dr Orlando says it’s common for kids of all ages to act…
During NYFW FW26, we kicked off the season by having dinner at Berimbau Brazilian Table in Midtown. Although we were there during the Winter, it is such a vibe to be in a spot where it feels like endless Summer, has great vibes, and an incredible menu that showcases Brazilian cuisine that is vibrant along with cocktails that will keep you coming back. We sat down with owner Mario De Matos to find out about this restaurant, its sister location in the West Village, and to know what we should order on our next visit! ATHLEISURE MAG: Mario, we had an incredible meal during NYFW at Berimbau Brazilian Table in Midtown. Before we delve into the restaurant, can you tell us a bit about your background, how you came to…
In shops, offices and bars across Spain, a single story has been monopolising conversation, said Enrique Aparicio in El Público (Madrid). The case of 25-year-old Noelia Castillo, whose life was ended by euthanasia in a Barcelona hospital last month, has “stirred the entire country”, sparking a fierce debate about an assisted-dying law introduced in 2021. Castillo had had a troubled life; she’d spent her teen years in state-run foster care, had suffered several sexual assaults, and in 2022 was gang raped by three men. Days after that, she threw herself out of a fifth-floor window. The suicide attempt left her paralysed and in chronic pain with depression: insisting that her life was no longer worth living, she asked that it be ended. However her father, backed by a religious advocacy…
When it comes to love, no-one is immune to the trials and tribulations of heartbreak – not even celebrities. The A-list seem out of reach most of the time, but at the end of the day, they’re all just girls standing in front of people, asking them to love them. Most of us follow our favourite stars through engagements, marriages, divorces and cheating scandals, and can’t help but see ourselves in them. And that relatability can be especially valuable. How, might you ask? Lovehoney’s sex and relationship expert Christine Rafe explains… DEEP DOWN THEY’RE JUST LIKE US Keeping tabs on the love lives of public figures can be deeply validating and comforting for our own situations. “Watching others stumble, repair, grow or walk away is reassuring, especially whenever our relationships…

A FEW DECADES AGO, if you arrived at 584 Jones Avenue, just south of Danforth Avenue in Greektown, it would likely be to see one of the Coulters — Dr. George Coulter or his cousin Dr. S.G. Coulter — or a colleague of theirs, like Dr. Axler, who liked to play banjo during his lunch break. And then you might walk around the building to Coulter Drugs, where Dr. George’s dad would fill your prescription. Patients grew so fond of the medical staff here — who were known to make house calls — that they’d show up with baklava and sponge toffee. Dr. George Coulter was even celebrated at Toronto East General Hospital for delivering the most babies. At first glance, the corner-lot address on Jones and Hazelwood Avenues appears…
There was once a time when keen cyclists recorded their rides with bike computers that just measured distance and speed (using magnets!). Nowadays, you can tap into what feels like every metric under the sun, to get an incredible insight into how you’ve performed on your ride. For most of us, the days of carrying a paper map feel long gone, too. Navigation is easy with modern GPS bike computers and the latest route-building apps. But with smartphones and smartwatches getting, well, smarter, many cyclists are opting to use these devices to track and direct their rides instead. While this means you save a chunk of cash and don’t accumulate yet another gadget, plus have access to functions that extend far beyond the world of bikes, can these gizmos really…
Louis Vuitton has long been synonymous with luxury and travel. The term “Escale,” meaning “stopover” in French, perfectly encapsulates the essence of travel, making it a fitting name for a collection that celebrates the art of exploration. The Escale collection, in particular, draws inspiration from the iconic trunks that have defined the brand’s identity. The Escale collection has undergone significant transformations over the years. Initially launched in 2014, it featured world timers adorned with hand-painted dials and intricate flag motifs. In recent years, however, the collection has shifted toward more classic, time-only models. The 2026 relaunch marks a return to high complications while retaining the brand’s unmistakable aesthetic codes. At the 2026 LVMH Watch Week in Milan, Louis Vuitton revived its Escale collection with two statement pieces: the Escale Worldtime…

Twenty years after its final episode aired, Malcolm in the Middle is back for a long-awaited sequel miniseries. And as its title suggests, life is still unfair for the dysfunctional Wilkerson clan! The revival sees Frankie Muniz reprising the role that defined his career. In an exclusive chat with New Idea, Frankie, 40, reflects on stepping back into Malcolm’s shoes after all this time, and how he escaped being a victim of the child star curse… Everyone is excited for the reboot! Who came up with the idea? It’s something we have wanted to do and talked about doing for a long time – 10 years really. It started with the fans wanting it and us as a cast talking about how great it would be to come back as…
To some it was the moment the mask slipped. Wearing an open-necked white shirt, Mohsen Rafighdoost, former minister of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), was filmed in March 2025 reminiscing with an interviewer from the Tehran-based Didban Iran news website about the assassinations he had organised around Europe. There was Prince Shahriar Shafiq, 34, the last Shah of Iran’s nephew, who was shot twice in the head outside his mother’s home in Paris in 1979. Then there was the Shah’s last commander-in-chief, Gen Gholam Ali Oveissi, also shot dead in Paris in 1984. Rafighdoost explained with a chuckle he had also ordered the murder of Shapour Bakhtiar, the Shah’s final prime minister, who was killed in his Parisian home in 1991; and the stabbing to death a year later…
The 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence will see an extravaganza of American art in Philadelphia. A fresh survey of more than three centuries of the nation's creativity will be hosted by the Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMA) and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) in partnership with the Middleton family, holders of one of the country's finest private collections. This unprecedented three-way collaboration promises a broad new look at American traditions in the visual arts. The year 2026 will be a special celebration for both museums, as the PMA marks the 150th anniversary of its birth in 1876 and PAFA celebrates the refurbishment of its historic landmark building, designed by Frank Furness and George W. Hewitt, which opened in the spring of 1876 along with Philadelphia's…
Looking after your brain is something that happens over many years, and new findings from the AdventHealth Research Institute point to an encouraging option. Researchers report that sticking with a consistent aerobic exercise routine may help the brain remain biologically younger. This effect could support clearer thinking, better memory, and overall mental wellbeing. The research showed that adults who committed to a full year of aerobic exercise had brains that appeared almost one year younger than those of participants who did not change how active they were. Published in the Journal of Sport and Health Science, the study examined whether regular aerobic exercise could slow or even reverse what scientists call “brain age.” Brain age is estimated using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and reflects how old the brain appears compared…
For the first time in recent years, archaeologists have stepped inside the newfound tomb of an ancient Egyptian pharaoh in the Valley of the Kings and been greeted by hallmark inscriptions on the ceiling and traces of a celestial mural painted many millennia ago. In early 2025, Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced that a joint British and Egyptian archaeological team, the New Kingdom Research Foundation, had uncovered the find, which could change modern understanding of the ancient kingdom at a critical time in the 15th century B.C. The discovery also highlights how Egyptology has changed from its origins in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Discovery The new find is not, as some have suggested, the first royal tomb discovered in Egypt since Tutankhamun’s in 1922. The…

A LIGHT MIST FELL as I followed fourth-generation Newfoundlander Lori McCarthy into the forest. It was mid-June in Canada’s easternmost province, and I’d joined her on the Avalon Peninsula for a culinary workshop offered by her company Food Culture Place (from $72), which preserves the rural traditions of her homeland. “Newfoundlanders call this capelin weather,” McCarthy said, leading me up the steps to her yurt. Inside, a fire crackled in the woodstove. Shelves held hand-labeled jars—pickled knotweed, spruce-tip salt, dried chanterelles. The term, she explained, refers to the drizzly, late-spring days that arrive right before capelin, a species of silvery forage fish, come ashore to spawn. Life in Newfoundland is tied to the sea. For nearly 500 years, people here pulled a seemingly endless supply of Atlantic cod from the waters…
Not so long ago, the preferred recovery session from a gruelling day of high-intensity paddle-battles involved a tinnie, a durry, perhaps some plant-based relaxation for those inclined, and less-than-gentle calisthenic exercises on the dance floor, before waking to do it again with a raging case of dehydration, the mother of all headaches, and enough lack of shut-eye to ensure a mid-heat microsleep was a distinct possibility. Stories from pro surfing’s sex-drugs-and-rock-’n’-roll era have become folklore, from Nat Young and Occy, to the escapades of Kong, to Shane Herring marking his win at the 1992 Coke Classic at North Narrabeen by buying the bar 55 jugs of beer (with Sambuca shots in 44 of them!), to Andy Iron’s well-documented battles in the early-noughties and more. These wild days created many iconic…
When Henri Matisse exhibited Woman with a Hat, a technicolour portrait of his wife, at the 1905 Salon d'Automne in Paris, the artist was met with howls of derision. A woman depicted with an orange neck, green nose, and brown brows? The painting was labelled scandalous. The critics of the time didn't take kindly to the unfamiliar use of non-naturalistic colours and loose brushwork. “Cage of wild beasts,” sneered one critic, Louis Vauxcelles, at the works of Matisse and his contemporaries. It was a description that the French artist and his peers gleefully accepted. Works such as Woman with a Hat and The Joy of Life (1905) helped lay the foundation for Fauvism—the brief yet electrifying avant-garde movement of the early 20th century, of which Matisse was a chief instigator.…

After the massive U.S.-Israeli air assault, Iran retaliated militarily across the Middle East, firing missiles and drones into a dozen countries since Feb. 28. But the regime also has a long history of mounting terror attacks. Asked in March whether Americans ought to worry about attacks at home, President Donald Trump told TIME, “I guess.” “While the threat is very significant,” says John D. Cohen, who served as the Under Secretary for Intelligence and Analysis during the Obama Administration, “the good news is that the level of understanding and sophistication, especially amongst [U.S.] state and local law enforcement, has increased dramatically over the last decade and a half.” TIME spoke to Cohen as well as Bruce R. Hoffman, a counterterrorism and insurgency expert who has served in advisory roles to…
A mid mounting tensions within the royal family, Prince Harry’s ongoing battle over security arrangements has taken a dramatic new turn. Insiders tell Closer that the latest development could deepen the rift between Harry and his family, as he believes both King Charles and Prince William have played a part in the controversy. And, in what could be a major blow for the Duke of Sussex, reports now suggest the Home Office is reluctant to reinstate his taxpayer-funded security, fearing a public backlash. LET DOWN ‘Harry was led to believe there would be progress on his security, and instead it feels like the door is being quietly closed on him again,’ says an insider. ‘Harry genuinely feels like he’s been betrayed by his dad and his brother. It feels very…
Water is one of the most wonderful additions to any garden. It instantly changes the feel of a space. I, for one, am magnetically drawn towards it – the lure of gazing into the depths, just for a moment, is too strong to resist. For organic gardeners, water is more than just another feature. A pond helps attract biodiversity into our gardens and growing spaces, particularly the type of biodiversity we actually want. Frogs help patrol slug populations, hoverflies eggs in the water and their larvae eat aphids, and birds come for refreshment. Even a small pond can help a garden become more self-sustaining. I confess I'm rather partial to making container ponds. I now have three of them and am eyeing up space for another. The're so easy to…
Since 2020, many Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioners around the world have been turning to classical Chinese medical texts, looking for viable treatment strategies for long Covid. At the top of the list are protocols for treating Gu syndrome (Gu zheng). For 3,500 years, this condition has been portrayed by a Chinese hexagram with two or three worms squirming in some sort of vessel. At first glance, it seems to mean that Gu is simply an aggressive parasitic affliction. And yet it's much more. Gu zheng translates as “black magic” or “possession syndrome” because its symptoms are so intense; so widespread, affecting both body and mind; so diverse and mercurial, shifting from one presentation to the next and then back again; and so utterly untreatable that the patient feels as…
Castles are still some of the most dramatic buildings on Earth today - so imagine how awe-inspiring they must have seemed to the people who built, lived in and attacked them hundreds of years ago. In Europe, castles began to spread from the 9th and 10th centuries and remained central to war and power throughout the Middle Ages. They were built as both homes and fortresses: places where rulers could live, store supplies and defend their land. But castles did not stay the same. Over time, builders kept redesigning them to meet new threats, from surprise raids to ever more powerful siege weapons. Here, you can follow how castle design evolved from simple early forts to mighty stone keeps and increasingly sophisticated strongholds with thicker walls and more elaborate defences.…
EVERY GREAT BUILD STARTS WITH A MOMENT, THE KIND THAT STICKS WITH YOU LONG AFTER THE PARKING LOT EMPTIES. For Chris Doolin, that moment happened on a warm summer night in Whitesburg, Kentucky. He was just a kid back then, cruising in his first mini-truck, a 1999 S-10, when a laid-out dually rolled through the lot with deep blue paint, a Denali front clip, and an attitude that demanded attention. That dually wasn’t just another truck. It was a line in the sand. From that night on, Chris knew he’d build something that stopped people the same way. Fast forward a few years, and that vision became a 1999 Chevy C3500 crew cab dually with a name that doesn’t leave room for debate: Game Changer. But like most real builds, it…
Constitutional carry exists in some states, like my home state of West Virginia. If I’m traveling south, most of those states also have permitless carry, too … but Virginia and North Carolina do not. If I travel north, things change because few of those states have permitless carry and some have no reciprocity with West Virginia. If you’re traveling with a self-defense handgun, it’s important for you to know the law in every state you will pass through. POSSESSION/OWNERSHIP First, I need to qualify everything you’re about to read by saying I am not a lawyer, nor do I play one on the television, on the internet or in gun magazines. But I am a former police officer, special agent and a gun owner who has traveled into and through…
For many, living at a residential airpark with a plane of their own in the hangar is the ultimate aviation goal. Those who live at a fly-in community integrate flying into their daily lives, sharing the spoils of flight with like-minded neighbors. Ben Sclair has been documenting airparks for more than three decades and followed in the footsteps of his father Dave, who moved the Sclair family to Shady Acres Airport (3B8) in Spanaway, Washington, shortly before creating the Living With Your Plane (livingwithyourplane.com) directory. This resource maps current and anticipated fly-in communities across the country and defines an airpark as a “runway surrounded by residential property where there’s two or more lots with deeded legal access to that common airstrip.” There are 710 airparks in the world cataloged by…
PICTURE IT: A twentysomething woman is posing in front of a mirror in her bedroom, modelling a Y2K-era red dress that she’s selling online. But the woman isn’t real and the room isn’t real—only the dress is. And it’s actually brand new, ready to be “drop-shipped” via a fast-fashion website the moment it’s sold. It’s the latest scam in the world of second-hand shopping, one that couldn’t have existed six years ago. And not just because there was no accessible AI to create it but because the premise—that a used dress could be more in demand than a new one—was unthinkable. But tastes are changing. According to online thrift shop ThredUp, resale grew eight times faster than the broader retail-clothing sector in 2024 and the global second-hand apparel market is…
The Israeli-US war against Iran and its proxies has become a proving ground for two competing concepts of military escalation, each of which threatens to become a trap. On one side, Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu have failed thus far in their ill-defined and shifting strategic aims. Despite killing Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, and other key leaders, the clerical regime remains and Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium is unsecured. Airstrikes are intensifying and hitting more targets. Tehran’s counter is a “horizontal escalation”, one long prepared by the regime, that is intended to widen the conflict geographically, with strikes on the Gulf states, and also in terms of the costs to Washington and the global economy, not least in energy supplies. The coming days and weeks are likely to…
NEED TO KNOW RELEASEMarch 16, 2026 DEVELOPERAuroch Digital PUBLISHERDotemu LINK steam.pm/app/2321780 I sometimes have trouble keeping track of all the different Starship Troopers games out there, but the new Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War! stands out for a couple of reasons. One, it’s being made by Auroch Digital, developer of the very excellent Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun, and two, there’s now a demo on Steam so you can get into the bug hunt action (and take your first step toward citizenship) for free, right now. In some ways, Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War! – based on the little bit I’ve played of the demo – bears some resemblance to its Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun cousin. It’s got that blocky boomer shooter visual style, and violence is wet and plentiful. But within just…
Borrowing a page from the Real Housewives’ table-flipping playbook, the USDA recently flipped the old food pyramid. Instead of emphasizing grains, the focus is now on protein, produce and natural fat. Will the dramatic switcheroo get Americans leaner and healthier? Some experts, including Harvard nutrition authority David Ludwig, M.D., Ph.D., are cautiously optimistic. And Michigan mom Christine Trimpe, 59, says the strategy made her 101 pounds lighter: “I failed at diets for 30 years. Then I flipped the food pyramid, and I’ve been thriving ever since!” Quick background: Every five years, the USDA helps create Dietary Guidelines for Americans, a report outlining the optimal way to eat based on current research. It always comes with a diagram to help us understand everything at a glance—which is how the original food…
KITCHEN The ’90s turquoise kitchen has been given a sleek, mid-century modern look. Winckelmans red tiles from Design Central look striking on the wall alongside the oak veneer and Melteca Melamine Green Slate kitchen cupboards. The stainless steel countertop is both practical and nostalgic. SEE THE LIGHT With the help of a spatial designer, Carly and Tom opted to reclaim some of the large hallway space to create a family bathroom and ensuite. Opening the entrance to walk through to the kitchen also restored some flow to the home. Resene Half Rice Cake was used on the interior walls and Quarter Rice Cake for the skirting. NEW OUTLOOK The new window seat, with its wide sliding windows, looks out to the extended deck. A vintage couch was recovered and the…
Unless you’ve been living under a rock (which is becoming more attractive given Australia’s high property prices), you may have noticed a new social trend. Grown adults are living in the family home for longer. It’s an arrangement that can have upsides for everyone as long as clear rules are put in place from the outset. Among Australians aged 18-29, one in two (54%) men and 47% of women shares a roof with their parents. Those numbers have jumped in the last 25 years. Back in 2001, 47% of men and just one in three (36%) women aged 18 to 29 lived in the family home. It’s easy to put rising numbers of KIPPERS – Kids in Parents’ Pockets, down to poor housing affordability and a tight rental market, but…
1. Queen Elizabeth II was born Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor in London on April 21, 1926. 2. She wasn’t originally expected to be queen, but the course of her life shifted dramatically when her uncle Edward VIII (later the Duke of Windsor) abdicated the throne in 1936. 3. Elizabeth took the crown in 1952 after the death of her father, King George VI. 4. She made her first radio broadcast at just 14 years old, speaking on the BBC’s Children’s Hour. 5. She helped usher in the modern iteration of monarchy. For example, her 1953 coronation made history as the first to be televised. 6. During World War II, Elizabeth trained as a driver and mechanic in the Auxiliary Territorial Service. (Yes, she could literally fix a car.) 7. She…
Abusive managers clearly do harm to employees. But what impact do seemingly trivial managerial missteps have on workers? To answer that question, researchers partnered with a national retail chain in Israel to study how employees reacted when their managers let them down in a small way: by failing to deliver an expected birthday gift on time. At this company every employee with at least a year of tenure receives a gift and a card, hand-delivered by that person’s manager. The date of delivery is tracked digitally. Using data on 8,722 employees across 252 stores from 2018 to 2019, the researchers designated the people who’d received their gift within five days of their birthday (42% of workers) the control group. Those who’d received their gift in the month after their birthday…
Raw results 2025 Nichols N1A Elliott Hughes ‘I WENT A little deep into that corner – ended up in the kitty litter,’ laughs Steve Nichols. I’m sitting in the back seat of a Range Rover Velar, shoulder-to-shoulder with the design maestro behind the legendary McLaren MP4/4 that Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost drove to dominate the 1988 Formula 1 season. Young Australian hotshoe – and Aston Martin F1 simulator driver – Bart Horsten is at the wheel, sighting a lap of southern Spain’s Guadix Circuit. Steve, unusually gregarious for an engineering genius, is along for the craic. His jocularity is in stark contrast to my growing trepidation. Clouds build as we clamber out of the Velar and gather around the 700bhp, sub-900kg, rear-drive creation that bears his name: the Nichols…
Fast forward a decade or so and I kept a 20-gallon tank with common fishes of Massachusetts—largemouth bass, rock bass, bluegills, darters, suckers, bullheads, and more. A fish watcher gets to witness the many mood changes that occur, even in a tiny glass ecosystem, and bass would switch from sedentary behavior to attack mode in milliseconds. After an education in fishery biology, I was equally fascinated to watch the behavior of bass and other species in the extra-large aquariums that held center stage at In-Fisherman’s offices where I worked for 30 years. When Aqua-Vu underwater cameras came along, views of the depths reinforced perceptions of what we’d seen in tanks and while fishing. Magic Moves Largemouths respond to particular cues. I’ve watched perch, bluegills, shiners, and shad swim within inches…
A woodpecker hammering on your home to communicate can be loud and annoying, but it typically won’t cause structural damage. On the other hand, you might be in for a real headache if woodpeckers hunt for bugs, store nuts, or try to nest in your walls. Of the 22 woodpecker species in North America, only a handful—Downy, Hairy, Pileated, Acorn, and Northern Flicker—tend to cause problems. Here are some of the ways to ward off the industrious birds without harming them. BEDAZZLE Reflected light from streamers, pie pans, or CDs hung on strings near problem areas can significantly reduce wood peckers visits. DE-BUG Small holes, scattered or in neat rows, indicate that the birds are looking for insects. In this case, you may need to have an exterminator treat the…
THE FLIGHT instructor was known for being quiet in the aircraft. He’d show the learners what to do, then sit back and watch. His debriefs consisted of signing the logbook and saying, “You did pretty good. See you next week.” The students began searching for other instructors—the reason? They were unsure if they were “doing this right” and “making progress” because the instructor did not supply this information. There was no postflight debrief. If your training flights do not end with some time for debriefing, you are not getting your money’s worth. The purpose of the debrief is to discuss what was done during the flight, the standards the pilot reached or came close to reaching, what needs work, and how to achieve the standards required. Tech Support Many instructors…
YOU MAY HAVE NOTICED THE SHIFT HAPPENING on the high street–the clothes on the shop floor right now are really good. Really, really good. And it’s not just a happy coincidence. Now, some of the most acclaimed fashion designers have stepped away from the world of luxury and taken the creative helm at our favourite high-street stores. First it was Clare Waight Keller, of Chloé and Givenchy fame, who announced a permanent move to Uniqlo in 2023. Then, the following year, red-carpet fixture Zac Posen – who has dressed everyone from Ariana Grande to Rihanna – took over at American giant Gap Inc. And, most recently, the Scottish designer Jonathan Saunders stepped up at & Other Stories. You might say there’s something of a creative revolution happening on the high…
Jessica Alba is back in front of the camera and has returned to the red carpet with a renewed focus on her film career. The actress, 44, stepped back from screen work to concentrate on her three children and on her consumer-goods empire after splitting from her husband of 17 years, the film producer Cash Warren, last year. But now, she has three films and a TV series lined up, the most advanced being The Mark, in which she plays a spy who recruits a single father – portrayed by the British actor Tom Hopper – to act as a decoy in a deadly mission. Jessica, who co-founded the female-driven production company Lady Metalmark, is due to appear in Eva Longoria Bastón’s thriller series Confessions on the 7:45, playing a…

At this time of the year, warmer temperatures and longer hours of daylight tempt us out into the open air, encourage daffodils, narcissi, and bluebells to raise their heads proudly above the ground, and remind spring-flowering trees that it’s time once again to cover their branches with an abundance of pink and white blossoms. Camellias unfurl crimson petals, magnolias cover bare branches with white and magenta star-shaped blooms, and—perhaps most beautiful of all—the flower buds of cherry trees open to clothe each branch with gorgeous, dense clusters of intense pink. In some parts of the world, especially in Japan, flowering cherry trees add a glorious, breathtaking mass of colour to the landscape in March and April. Wherever we see cherry trees in spring, the flowers are so prolific that the…
IN LATE NOVEMBER, JUST A FEW DAYS BEFORE THANKSgiving and a little over a week after the end of the longest government shutdown in American history, Senator Markwayne Mullin took a break from Washington, D.C., to wander the grounds of the Oklahoma cattle ranch where his son Jim was about to be married. “It's a big day!” the 48-year-old father of six said straight to camera in a video he posted on X. Mullin, who, on Capitol Hill, tends toward tightly tailored suits that emphasize his ex-MMA fighter physique, was dressed down in double denim and a wide-brimmed Stetson as he surveyed the progress. Bales of hay the size of boulders were being lowered by tractors into stacks to serve as the ceremony's backdrop, while Mullin's wife of 28 years,…
Xiaomi’s hugely appealing modular camera lens concept is set to enter mass production, according to reports. Back at MWC 2025 almost a year ago, one of the most interesting concept devices on display was the Xiaomi Modular Optical System. This discrete camera lens and sensor combo uses magnets to seamlessly snap onto the back of a Xiaomi phone. It looks like a prime lens you would attach to a DSLR, only with a sensor built in as well. While Xiaomi even had the concept working at the mobile show last year, there was no word on whether it would actually become a product people could buy. Now, high-profile leaker Digital Chat Station has issued a post on Weibo (fave.co/4r852e3) claiming that mass production of the accessory has begun. They expect…
When Nathan Turner set out to reimagine and expand a longtime client’s Turks and Caicos residence, he kept one insight front and center. “These are people who entertain a lot,” he says. The empty nesters planned to host their children, along with a steady rotation of friends and relatives. “The house would be full.” Often. After a gut renovation—overseen by local firm Coast Architects—of the existing tropical modern structure and the addition of a similarly styled wing that more than tripled the original square footage, the property now counts nine bedrooms. “Times that by two, and there could easily be 18-plus people in the house,” Turner says. With that in mind, the Los Angeles–based designer approached the project as though he were creating a boutique hotel. That mindset shaped everything.…
For many outdoor enthusiasts, biblically inclined or not, Tasmania’s Walls of Jerusalem are a magnetising, pilgrimage-provoking destination. The names themselves here inflame imaginations. Mt Jerusalem. The Temple. Solomon’s Throne. Wailing Wall. King David’s Peak. Zion Hill. Vale of Bethesda. Valley of Hinom. Lake Siloam. Yet … while once wild, and despite being enclosed in its eponymous national park, the Walls of Jerusalem are now tamed. At the Walls’ new central campsite are plastic tent platforms and toilets capacious like the Walls precinct itself. Manicured Meccano tracks (handrails next?) are spreading like cancer. There’s an insidious if understandable corralling of humans; go here not there, this way not that. But the Walls of Jerusalem themselves? They are as amazing as ever. And there are ways of visiting them with less fettered…
Not many predators will eat prey that’s already dead. It would be like going to a restaurant and finding that all the food is green with rot, then eating there anyway. Scavenging vultures aside, most predators have evolved a natural aversion to deceased animals to avoid the risk of contracting a fatal illness from rotting or diseased meat. And some prey species have become aware of this aversion. Animals such as opossums, snakes and frogs have evolved a defence mechanism to deceive predators by ‘playing dead’, otherwise known as thanatosis or tonic immobility. This fear-based involuntary response to danger is a temporary induced paralysis and muscular rigidity that mimics a naturally deceased animal. Body temperature and breathing rates can be drastically reduced to fool hungry predators. For example, the American…
In April 2008, Tripoli played host to an historic summit between Vladimir Putin and Muammar Gaddafi. The first such meeting in 23 years, it took place at a sprawling compound in the southern suburbs of the capital. Over 80 years ago Bab al-Azizia had been an Italian army barracks on the frontier of Mussolini’s empire – now it was Gaddafi’s fortified palace. The dictator had pitched his characteristic Bedouin tent in the compound’s grounds to greet his guest. He was urgently looking to rearm and secure his brittle regime after surrendering his enormous cache of chemical weapons in 2003. Putin, just weeks away from the end of his second term, was in town to help him do just that. Together, the two men began negotiating the purchase of new Russian…
I had a bit of a shock this month. It was my own fault really: after talking to Toby Roberts, Raspberry Pi's inhouse maker of awesome things, about his BBC Micro tribute, I thought I'd install an emulator on my Raspberry Pi 500+ and enjoy some retro computing. Not a BBC Micro - although I can remember using one at school, I didn't get deep enough into programming to have any sort of nostalgia for that machine. No, I wanted to recreate another old system - the Sega Mega Drive, courtesy of the Sega Genesis Collection of legal ROMs available via Steam. There's something about pretending to be a superfast blue hedgehog that brings a nostalgic tear to my eye, so why not install RetroPie and see if after all…
AS Demi Moore walked the red carpet of the 2026 Actor Awards on March 1, fans were shocked by her noticeably skinny frame. Dressed in a stunning strapless Schiaparelli gown, her rail-thin arms and razor-sharp clavicle bones were on full display as she posed for photos. “She is so pretty, but she now looks malnourished,” one online commenter wrote. “Big fan, but this is definitely concerning,” wrote another on Demi’s Instagram. The 63-year-old is just one of many who’ve made headlines in recent months over their dramatically shrinking bodies. Emma Stone’s slender-tha-never figure at the BAFTA Awards in late February also drew concern, as did Kelly Osbourne’s sunken temples and alarmingly slim frame at the Brit Awards March 1. Hollywood hasn’t been this thin since the early 2000s, when “thigh…
Why men should be worried about the menopause - and how this guide can help Contrary to the old stereotype, men do talk. We talk football, lifting PBs, fantasy leagues, craft beer, ageing knees, protein hacks, music, food, drink - even hair transplants if you catch us on the right day. But there's one glaring blind spot almost no man brings up: menopause. “It's her thing,” you might think. In reality, the menopause affects you too - your relationship, home life, sex life, patience, confidence, energy, mental health and, yes, sometimes even your own hormones. Between Joe and myself, we've spent decades interviewing doctors, coaches, scientists, athletes and health experts across every corner of men's wellbeing. But if there's one area where men are the least prepared, it's understanding what…
Traitors do not just lurk in Ardross Castle. They are everywhere – and we Faithfuls must work hard to expose and banish the deceivers in our midst. We live in a world where they prowl among us: fibbing partners, malingering colleagues, paltering politicians, misleading salespeople and cheating scammers. Their cloaks are on, their hoods are up, their knives are drawn. On average, Britons lie twice a day, according to a 2014 study * Most of us – sometimes even the police – are quite bad at detecting liars. Usually, this is because of our lack of attention or poorly tuned listening skills. There’s a famous 2010 experiment in which spectators at a basketball game were asked to count the number of passes between players wearing white shirts. They did…
You can train for months, tick off the long runs, practise your fuelling, break in your shoes, set your alarm before sunrise more times than you can count, and still find yourself standing on the start line thinking: ‘What on earth have I signed up for?’ Whether it’s your first marathon or your first 5K coming up, race morning has a way of turning confident runners into a bundle of nerves. Your heart races before you’ve taken a single step. Doubts creep in. Everyone else suddenly looks faster, calmer, more prepared. And somewhere in the back of your mind, a small voice wonders if you really can do this. The truth is, those feelings aren’t a sign that you’re not ready. They’re a sign that you care. For most people…
"I wanted it to feel like an adult woman’s home. And at the same time, like an absolute whimsical child’s playground.” —Scout Willis “I want people to come to this house and fall in love,” says musician Scout Willis wistfully, imagining the parties that will surely unfold in the charming storybook house in Hollywood that her friends have nicknamed “the Chapel of Love”. “I want people to meet each other here and make out,” she says, nostalgic for the sort of in-person encounters that take place in her recent music video “It Ain’t Nothing”, where she and costar Thomas Doherty lock eyes and graze fingertips amid revelers in a sprawling mansion. For Willis, though, this time, it’s the house itself she fell for. “I walked in and saw this ceiling,”…
THERE’S NOTHING QUITE LIKE THE FLAKE AND puff of pastry. A style that sits somewhere between shortcrust and puff, it’s best made by hand – a quietly meditative process. The butter is worked into the flour using a French patisserie technique known as fraisage, where it’s smeared across the bench with the heel of your hand. This creates thin sheets of butter throughout the dough; as they melt in the oven, steam forms and creates air pockets, which give the pastry its signature flaky lift. A touch of vinegar is added to inhibit gluten development, ensuring a more delicate, tender crumb. And, as with all pastry, temperature is key. If the butter becomes too soft, it will over-incorporate and you’ll lose those defined layers. If in doubt, return the dough…
THE SIGHT OF A SCORPION might make some people nervous, but Javier Aznar González de Rueda sees only a perfect muse for his camera. The Madrid-based photographer has spent years documenting bugs that shine—and virtually all scorpions fluoresce when exposed to ultraviolet light because of special substances in their exoskeletons that react to high-energy rays. Fluorescence is widespread in insects and arachnids. Why that’s the case, though, is a mystery. Scientists have hypotheses: It might help with camouflage, signaling to mates, or sun protection. But hard evidence is scarce. During night walks, Aznar scouts for his multi-legged models, scanning the ground with a UV flashlight for telltale pops of neon. To get the best shots, he modified a pair of off-camera flashes to emit UV light, which, he says, “shows…

The 39-year-old South African has already won four league titles in his home country and is now looking to do the same in Algeria, breaking new ground for black African coaches. Mokwena has taken Mouloudia Alger to the top of the table in the North African country’s Ligue1, losing just one league game by the halfway point of the season and establishing a handy lead at the top of the standings. Coaches from south of the Sahara have never previously been employed in Algeria, but Mokwena’s hiring reflects the glowing reputation that a new crop of coaches from South Africa, all heavily influenced by Pep Guardiola, have earned around the continent. Mokwena is the nephew of Jomo Sono, one of South Africa’s all-time greats, but unlike his uncle, or his…
“Just a few weeks ago, Nato marked the fourth anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine with fresh pledges of solidarity and assistance,” said The Daily Telegraph. Today, that war “risks becoming the forgotten conflict”. Advanced US-made weapons that Kyiv’s allies could have bought to help it deflect Russian attacks are being fired at cheap Iranian drones instead – depleting supplies that could take years to restock. European leaders are distracted by threats to their allies in the Gulf region, and the potential shocks to their economies. And to cap Kyiv’s dismay, Donald Trump has suspended sanctions on Russian oil, said the Daily Mail. The deal – apparently struck during an hour-long call with Vladimir Putin – should “curb rising prices” on US forecourts, but at what cost to Europe’s…
ZAC EFRON Zac has consistently denied plastic surgery rumours, which erupted in 2021 after he shared a video promoting Bill Nye’s Earth Day Musical. Fans fixated on his dramatically different jawline, sparking claims of chin and jaw surgery. The 38-year-old later revealed that he’d shattered his jaw in a fall, leaving his chin bone hanging off. After intense physical therapy, his masseter muscles overcompensated and grew significantly. Zac said, ‘The masseters just grew, they just got really, really big.’ JAMES LOCKE James, 39, candidly admitted that he got ‘carried away,’ with plastic surgery. Listing his procedures, the TOWIE star has previously said, ‘I started off with a hair transplant. I’ve had my ears done before. I’ve had my teeth done…’ Opening up about work he had following an injury, he…
There are plenty of tech fatalists who are convinced that artificial intelligence will put us all out of a job. That, or lead to a Terminator-style uprising. They’re probably right on both counts. But until that day of reckoning, why not make the most of it? We asked Ethan Mollick, renowned AI researcher and author of New York Times bestseller Co-Intelligence, for guidance on making the fast-evolving chatbots work for you. Treat it like a career coach Focus less on using AI to help you write your argument for a pay rise — instead, have a discussion with it: “Help me think about and articulate this.” As a thought partner, it’s very useful. I’m a business-school professor and people always want advice on how to ask for raises. It’s very…
When the Beatles Anthology Series had its television premiere in November of 1995, it was a watershed moment. The eight-episode program was the first authorized and comprehensive narrative history of The Beatles in documentary form. And crucially it was an opportunity for the bandmates to personally tell their own story. The “must see” TV event paired creative production design with new and archival interviews plus an array of footage and performances that documented the history, formation and music of the band—a journey that began in post-WWII Liverpool, musical skills polished in the clubs of Hamburg, leading to the Beatlemania that would captivate the world. It charted the band's arrival in the U.S., contextualized it against the backdrop of the Vietnam War, 60s counterculture and assassinations, the spirituality the group sought…
