Initially, I found the proposition of taking a “price-point” rifle to Africa to be a bit unsettling. Stalking an elk-sized kudu through miles of bush is an entirely different proposition than shooting a whitetail from a blind in Texas. DURING THE WAR OF 1812, British Major General Robert Ross arrested Dr. William Beanes and four other Americans after they captured a small patrol of looting British soldiers and locked them in the county jail. Ross had the Americans brought to the HMS Tonnant. Nearby townsfolk contacted a lawyer in Georgetown named Francis Scott Key to help arrange their release. Key had made a name for himself during the Aaron Burr treason trial in 1807. It’s nearly impossible to fathom the challenges one will encounter as an orphan in Africa. The AIDS epidemic, genocide, drug abuse and a variety of other societal crises produce the tragic casualty of parentless children. In South Africa, a man named Abraham Kriel recognized the problem after the economic depression and famine in the 1930s left hundreds of South African children homeless. Originally sponsored by and expanded to several locations across South Africa by the Dutch Reformed Church, the now-independent non-profit Abraham Kriel Children’s Home in Nylstroom is home to nearly 200 children ranging in age from 3 to 19. If you’re as obsessed with medieval and Viking-era history and weaponry as I am, then you’ve likely watched Netflix’s The Last Kingdom or have it on your to-do list. Over the last seven decades, the Kalashnikov design has been modified to run a wide variety of rounds, from the needle-like 5.45x39mm to 12-gauge shells. More recently, two maverick designers, Sharps Bros. and Tromix Lead Delivery Systems, have taken the versatile platform to the next level by building an AK chambered in .458 SOCOM. You would never know where Primary Weapons Systems (PWS) is actually located simply by relying on your phone’s navigation app or by looking at a map. The PWS lair is hidden deep in the woods, where visitors need an escort to find what is reminiscent of an old bunker entrance. All kidding aside, it’s actually a rather large, nondescript building with no external identifying markers of any kind. It’s just another building in a Boise, Idaho, industrial park. AFRICA is the largest continent, covering 20.3 percent of the planet’s surface. By contrast, the contiguous United States cover roughly 1.58 percent. But Africa’s vastness and diversity, above and beyond its size, are what make it so special. The regions of Africa best known for hunting are the continent’s southern and eastern countries. Of course, hunting in Africa is not without its unique controversies, not the least of which was the killing of “Cecil the Lion” in Zimbabwe. In general, when managed properly and ethically, hunting helps African game and its human inhabitants in many ways. What comes to mind when you think of Italy? Maybe Rome and its rich history, the culture of Florence, the mind-numbing beauty of Venice, the food or the wine? If you’re a hunter, I’ll bet it’s not hunting—especially not big-game hunting. I don’t know why that is. Each challenge is judged by a set of experts who crown one final winner and anoint them "Master of Arms."
