It’s believed Henry Croft was the first Pearly King, an orphan road sweeper and rat-catcher, who collected money for charity. During the 1800s, street sellers – known as costermongers – wore trousers that were adorned with pearl buttons at the seams, which were usually found by market traders. In Victorian London, they imitated the wealthy West End society, sewing the shiny buttons into their hand-me down waistcoats and caps. According to The Health Foundation, in the next 25 years the number of people older than 85 will double to 2.6 million.
