WHAT MAKES A MUM I read The true cost of infertility (25 April) with interest. It saddens me that society has placed so much pressure on women to bear the fruit of their own womb that they feel compelled to continue on and on with the expensive and invasive quest that is IVF, no matter what the financial, physical or emotional impact there may be. As a mother by conception and by adoption, I am frustrated that IVF is perceived to be the only alternative route to parenthood while adoption tends to be considered a last resort, for when all other avenues have failed. 1 Preheat a large frying pan over a medium heat (high if using an electric stove). Brush each aubergine slice with oil and fry for 8 mins until golden on both sides. Remove and drain on kitchen roll. In the same hot pan, dry fry the chillies whole until they pop as the skins burst; remove and finely chop, seeds and all. 2 Combine tahini ingredients and add water until a sauce consistency, then season to taste. EMILY MADDICK Grazia’s executive features director I’m torn with this book. On the one hand I think Sittenfeld is triumphant in her modern take on Austen (no mean feat) in tone and execution, and the story has a great pace and witty, wry, spot-on social observations. On the other hand, I want to yell, ‘Oh just give up on this already!’ – especially with the characters of Mr and Mrs Bennet.
