Christmas comes but once a year, so they say – and thank the baby Jesus it does, as we are exhausted from putting together this drama-packed, full-to-the-brim, bursting-at-the-seams Christmas issue! I don’t think I’ll be able to muster that much energy for at least another year. As well as a preview of this year’s festive snogs, barneys and betrayals, we spent a bit of quality time with some of your favourite stars for our special Christmas photo shoots, in addition to pulling together the highlights of non-soap telly (yes, such a thing does actually exist!) and your bumper 14-day TV listings. Phew! So all that’s left for me to do now is to leave you and yours with one Christmas wish – that the only dramas you encounter this Yuletide…

Christmas Eve is a day of sorrow for Dot, as she closes up at the launderette for the last time. Having been abruptly ousted from her job, poor Dot is looking at a retirement she doesn’t want. She’s already feeling alone thanks to her problems with her sight and the number of friends she’s lost this year. So to have the door closed on the vocation she’s enjoyed for decades makes it hard for Dot to feel any Christmas cheer at all. Abi tries to help her gran say goodbye in the right way by preparing a party for her at the launderette on the day before she leaves. It’s a modest buffet, but Dot appreciates her kindness – although she’s sad to find out Abi won’t be in Walford…

“IF MARIA GOES TO JAIL, SHE WON’T COME OUT THE SAME PERSON” Terrified Maria faces the awful prospect of spending Christmas in jail this fortnight, as she stands trial for her sham marriage to husband Pablo… However, just as Maria prepares for the possibility that she’ll be torn away from the people she cares about most, smitten Aidan declares his undying love! “I think Aidan genuinely does want to be with Maria,” explains actress Samia Longchambon, who plays her. “It’s not just a sexual attraction – they have a long history through Maria’s connection with the Connor family that we haven’t seen on screen. And after all they went through together recently with Caz, Maria has realised that Aidan has her back no matter what. She loves him, too!” But…

Santa makes a surprise delivery to Leanne this Christmas – her sister Toyah is back in town! Toyah’s arrival is a shock for Leanne, considering that she was meant to be going to her sister’s in Liverpool for her turkey dinner… “Toyah has a row with her husband on Christmas morning, and just ups and leaves!” explains Georgia Taylor, who reprises the role. “She visits Leanne because she needs a support network around her – like putting a sticking plaster on things. “Although they haven’t been on screen together for a while, Leanne and Toyah have obviously kept in touch,” continues the star. “That’s how Toyah finds herself back on the Street.” Leanne is stunned when Toyah drops the bombshell that she’s been having an affair. Deranged Emma has a new target for her hate this Christmas, as Pete’s girlfriend Leyla gets her feet under the table at the Barton family home. Emma’s dislike of Leyla has been growing ever since she uncovered Emma’s addiction to sleeping tablets and alerted the Barton boys. Following that, Emma has rebuffed all attempts by Leyla to re-establish a friendship, leading to some awkward moments for all concerned. So imagine just how furious Emma is when she comes to discover that Leyla is going to be joining them for dinner on Christmas Day… It’s a pretty miserable time for the family, as they try to enjoy the day but are all lost in their memories of tragic James. Ryan proves he’s not perfect husband material after all this fortnight, when the cheating scoundrel sleeps with Mercedes McQueen! There’s a lot of tension between Ryan and his fiancée Amy in the wake of the custody battle over young Leah and Lucas – and with Leah blaming Ryan for taking her dad Ste away from her, he struggles to keep it together as the feisty girl steps up her hate campaign. Amid escalating tensions, Ryan is dumbfounded as to how Leah is still wrapping Amy around her little finger – and when Ste’s name is thrown into the mix, the copper hits the roof and makes a jaw-dropping announcement that prompts livid Amy to throw him out of the house! Last Christmas we were gripped by the newest TV adaptation of the Agatha Christie mystery And Then There Were None , so it seemed an obvious decision to have another Christie whodunnit ready for this festive fortnight (though sadly this doesn’t feature Aidan Turner in just a towel).
