In a slightly lateral way, this issue of Interior concerns itself with projects and ideas that are towing the line between the old and the new. One of my favourite new interiors and one that best encapsulates this delightful tension is the newly erected Bishop Selwyn Chapel in Auckland’s Parnell (p. 22). The chapel, which sits within a larger and architecturally mixed compound, is an inspired, glass-clad space that almost poetically acknowledges its context. For most of their history, cathedrals have taken a long time to build – so much so that, even in the slow-moving Middle Ages, architectural styles could change several times in the centuries it took to complete one. The oldest portions of Worcester Cathedral are Norman, but by the time the building was completed 420 years later, sections had been built in a series of different styles. Fabrizio Calenti (FC): Raw material procurement is still the most complicated and, in a way, the most interesting process. Nylon is a highperforming fibre; for this reason it is also expensive. Therefore, it’s not used in packaging. There is no such thing as pure nylon waste; it is a component of a product. So when we started, we had people travelling the world and scouting where we could find suitable products containing Nylon 6 – with reasonable quality, purity and enough content that would allow us to separate the nylon from the non-nylon traction. New Zealand’s leading commercial interior professionals were out in full force at the 2016 Interior Awards night, held in the historic venue of St-Matthew-in-the-City in Auckland on 23 June. Over 350 people – including, among others, architects, designers, furniture makers and distributors as well as some of their respective clients and facilities managers – attended the highly entertaining evening. The event was made even more enjoyable with award-winning Mt Difficulty wines, Tuatara beers and Thomson Whisky cocktails. Inside Festival is considered one of the leading fixtures in the global interior design calendar. Co-located with the World Architecture Festival, the three-day series of conferences, events and exhibitions is scheduled to take place in Berlin, Germany, from 16–18 November.
