Captain Dolly looked at the ocean through the brass telescope. Her ship went up and down in the waves. In the distance, she saw something coming towards her! Was it a penguin? No, no feathers. Katherine loved numbers. The girl saw them everywhere she looked – she counted floorboards, trees, cracks in the pavement, and the train cars filled with timber and coal that went past White Sulphur Springs. The little town where she lived was nestled among the valleys of West Virginia in the USA. For this project, you need to give your club members some homework. Pick a cool story from an issue of Storytime – we suggest a fairy tale, as they have lots of interesting things in them! Get every member to read it. GATHER YOUR ART! Club members should find 3-5 pictures of things that appear in the story. For example, there might be a sword, a whale, the sun and a castle! Members should cut out pictures from old magazines or find them online and print them out. Everyone should bring what they find to the next club meeting, GET CRAFTY! Katherine graduated with honours and started a job as a mathematician in 1953. She worked for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), where she performed calculations related to aircraft design. Because she was African American, she had to work and eat separately from her white peers. In 1958, NACA was replaced by NASA (the National Aeronautics and Space Administration). Katherine worked there, and became Katherine Johnson after marrying Jim Johnson. She calculated the flight plans for the USA’s first manned mission into space in 1961 and the Apollo 11 mission, which landed the first humans on the Moon in 1969.
