The long-awaited criminal trial of two former security police officers accused of being involved in the kidnapping and murder of anti-apartheid activist Nokuthula Simelane has once again been delayed. The current medical aid scheme for serving and retired MPs was not viable and it was time for it to be restructured, said National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula. Tabling the R2.6 billion budget, Mapisa-Nqakula said the National Treasury allocation to the tune of R2.683 billion had a shortfall totalling R74 million. “This shortfall is largely driven by the compensation employment baseline reductions introduced by the National Treasury.” She said the continued budget reduction required mitigation steps to ensure financial viability and sustainability. “It is very clear that if steps are not taken in correcting the allocation and in reducing expenditure, a significant budget shortfall could occur in the 2024-25 financial year,” she said. Local law enforcement authorities and their Namibian counterparts are seemingly dodging serious questions about the millions of US dollars allegedly concealed on President Cyril Ramaphosa’s farm before criminals, reportedly from Namibia, helped themselves to the loot and splurged it in Cape Town. Former State Security Head Arthur Fraser has recently lodged a criminal complaint against Ramaphosa at the Rosebank police station for allegedly defeating the ends of justice, kidnapping of suspects, their interrogation on his property and bribery. Mexico City: A new caravan with more than 10 000 migrants has left Mexico with the aim of reaching the US border. The largest contingent so far this year, made up of Central American, South American and Caribbean migrants, departed late on Monday from the city of Tapachula in the Mexican state of Chiapas on the border with Guatemala. Many of its members have been waiting for months to regularise their immigration status in Mexico and legally transit to the US border. Stockholm: The Swedish government will not inject more capital into struggling Scandinavian airline SAS, the country’s industry minister said yesterday. This came a week after SAS said it was seeking to raise 9.5 billion kronor (abot R14.8bn) in new capital. Sweden and Denmark are SAS’s main shareholders, with each holding 21.8 percent stakes, which rose in the past two years. SCHOOLING was disrupted at Bardale Primary School in Mfuleni after several learners collapsed – allegedly due to a spiritual calling. Provincial Education Department spokesperson Bronagh Hammond said the incident led to several learners being sent home for displaying adverse symptoms. “The school was disrupted yesterday (Monday). The incident revolved around an alleged spiritual calling. The WCED did provide counselling support to the school. A meeting was arranged between staff and parents at the school. Learners who were not feeling well were advised to stay at home. Mining company’s activities must be probed Glencore has a lot to explain if the reports coming out of the US are anything to go by. The US Department of Justice made a dramatic announcement last month that Glencore pleaded guilty to and entered into a plea bargain to pay fines of more than $1.1 billion (R17bn) for bribery and market manipulation in several countries including the US itself, Brazil and seven African countries. South Africa was not mentioned as one of those countries, but there is a catch. LOS ANGELES: Elon Musk warned Twitter Inc that he might walk away from his $44 billion (R677bn) deal to acquire the social media company if it fails to provide the data on spam and fake accounts that he seeks. LONDON: The UK must invest in research and treatment of the so-called long Covid-19 cases as about 2 million citizens are still struggling from side effects of the disease, the UK Royal College of Nursing (RCN) said yesterday. Berlin: German police said yesterday they had opened an investigation on suspicion of criminally negligent homicide against three railway employees following a train derailment last week that cost five lives. The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has uncovered a scam that uses dead people’s IDs on the eNatis database to avoid paying what can be very high costs in terms of licences etc, says the Ministry in the Presidency. Briefing the standing committee on public accounts (Scopa) on referrals made by the SIU, Department of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluations’ Jonathan Timm said the corruption-busting body had made a total of 41 187 referrals for administrative action in 2020-21 and 24 782 the following year – bringing the number to 65 969. THE Department of Home Affairs described the decision by Irish low-cost airline Ryanair to force South Africans travelling to the UK to take a test in Afrikaans as a backward profiling system. UK-bound travellers who were unable to complete the test will be refused travel, according to the airliner. This was done “due to the high prevalence of fraudulent South African passports. We require passengers travelling to the UK to fill out a simple questionnaire issued in Afrikaans. Islamabad: Pakistan’s polio eradication campaign is in disarray after an alarming jump in cases last week. Eight polio cases have now been reported in children over the past month in North Waziristan district, bordering Afghanistan. They are the first cases in more than a year. This new outbreak, officials believe, is due to parents falsely marking themselves and their children as vaccinated. A probe into the outbreak has been launched.
