The BankservAfrica Economic Transactions Index (BETI) ended the year positively, despite the ongoing dismal economic context, and it signals an improvement in the economy. “After six consecutive months of declines, the BETI rose to an index level of 132.1 in December, almost on par with the January 2022 level of 132.8,” BankservAfrica head of stakeholder engagement Shergeran Naidoo said in a statement yesterday. As Eskom announced stage 6 load shedding until further notice yesterday, energy experts have called for the National Energy Crisis Committee (NECC) established by President Cyril Ramaphosa to provide regular updates on progress it is making to alleviate the worsening energy security crisis. A KWAZULU-NATAL man charged with killing a policewoman, Sergeant Nomkhosi Dlamini, in Pietermaritzburg has been released on R10 000 bail. Zamokuhle Christopher Vezi, 42, is accused of killing Dlamini, 48, from Thornville, while she was attending to a complaint in Snathing Village in eMahlathini. On November 11, police officers were investigating a case of assault and went to the suspect Vezi’s house. Vezi allegedly refused to open the door even though officers had identified themselves. When officers returned to their vehicle, Vezi allegedly opened fire on them. A now former employee at a car-hire company at Oliver Tambo International Airport, who was dismissed as he refused to get a Covid-19 vaccination on religious grounds, won his case against his employer in arbitration, when the commissioner declared his dismissal to be substantially unfair. It was ruled that the car-rental company had to pay Owen Cook six months’ salary. The company had adopted a mandatory vaccination policy, but Cook had applied for exemption from the policy, which was declined. He was dismissed in March last year for gross insubordination by refusing to carry out what the company said was a reasonable instruction, in that he failed to present a Covid-19 vaccination certificate as instructed. A non-governmental organisation (NGO) calling itself Blackhouse Kollective Foundation (BHK) wants to be allowed to join today’s legal battle between former president Jacob Zuma and President Cyril Ramaphosa as a friend of the court (amicus curiae). In the case, Ramaphosa wants the court to set aside summons for private prosecution that have been filed by Zuma. Zuma wants to privately prosecute Ramaphosa as “accessory after the fact” in connection with his matter against State advocate Billy Downer and journalist Karyn Maughan. LUSAKA: Zambia has started rationing electricity supply to mining companies following reduced power generation after a drop in water flowing into Lake Kariba, the state-owned power utility Zesco said. Water levels were down at 1.66% of usable storage for the Kariba North Bank Power Station in Zambia and the Kariba South Bank Power Station on the Zimbabwean side of the lake, said the Zambezi River Authority, which manages the dam. The north bank power station has an installed capacity of 1 080 megawatts (mw), while the power station in Zimbabwe has a capacity of 1 050MW. The deputy mayor of the Msunduzi Municipality, Mxolisi Mkhize, has hit back at allegations by the DA that municipal resources were used to deliver food parcels to residents in ward 28, to entice them to vote for the ANC. Mkhize dared the DA to produce one family that he gave food parcels to, on Sunday, as the ANC campaigned for the by-election in ward 28. Intercape has hailed a Makhanda High Court ruling which dismissed Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula’s leave to appeal an order forcing him and Eastern Cape Transport MEC Xolile Nqatha to develop an effective action plan to provide safety for the company’s bus drivers and passengers. Police are searching for gunmen who shot dead two men in the Durban CBD on Tuesday afternoon. Darryl Manickum and Tyron Pillay, both 30, were seated in a blue Hyundai i10 when they were confronted by the gunmen and fatally wounded. The incident took place on Yusuf Dadoo Street at about 4pm. Human skeletal remains were recovered from overgrown vegetation on Gemini Crescent in the Everest Heights area of Verulam yesterday. South Africa’s transition to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 could cost almost R6 trillion, according to a report by the National Business Initiative (NBI), in collaboration with Business Unity South Africa (Busa) and the Boston Consulting Group (BCG). SINCE the beginning of December, the eThekwini Municipality’s electricity department has faced escalating attacks on its infrastructure, with cable thieves striking during load shedding. As we enter 2023, it is devastating to see that so much remains the same with a spate of recent reports regarding the horrific rape and murder of women and children in the eThekwini region. KwaZulu-Natal remains the province with the highest number of gender-based violence (GBV) incidents and it is clear that much work needs to be done to turn this around. This requires on-the-ground action – across all spheres of government. The DA believes that there is a dire need for the formation of a formal task team – comprising private and public sector – to deal with this scourge.
