DIED Judy Heumann Disability-rights activist BY REBEKAH TAUSSIG When I learned that Judy Heumann had passed away on March 4 at 75, I felt anxious in a way I struggled to explain. Judy became disabled by polio around the same age I became disabled by cancer—both as toddlers. Raised in 1950s Brooklyn, Judy grew up in a world that never expected her to join it. When her mom hoisted her up the stairs to their local school in her chair, the administrator refused to let her attend, saying Judy was a fire hazard. After a long fight and years later, Judy was allowed into a public-school basement classroom with other disabled kids ages 9 to 21. As watchmakers from around the world gather in late March in Geneva for one of the industry’s biggest events—the Watches and Wonders fair—Switzerland-based Oris will announce a luxury diver’s watch with a swirly blue and green dial. There’s nothing remarkable in that, except that the dial of the Oris X Bracenet (2,350 Swiss francs, or $2,508) is made of upcycled ghost fishing nets recovered from the ocean. Something happened at Asbury University. Many Christians called the weeks-long worship service at the small Wilmore, Ky., school, which attracted tens of thousands and disrupted campus life, a revival. Fervent worship and prayer that began during a Feb. 8, 2023, chapel service continued for hours afterward, then days, with word soon spreading globally through social media and national news coverage. In the 15 years since its inception, Airbnb has become the travel industry’s bread and butter. But once regarded as the affordable option, Airbnb prices began creeping up as the platform became more popular. Airbnb’s average global price rose from $110 per night in 2020 to $137 in 2021, according to All The Rooms, which catalogs vacation-rental properties. In February, Airbnb cited its average daily rate (ADR) as $153 for the last quarter of 2022. Meanwhile, in the fourth quarter of 2022, Hilton reported an ADR of $151.81, and InterContinental Hotel Group reported $125.58. While costs are up across the board, the gap between hotels and Airbnb is closing. The city’s landmark Chain Bridge will reopen to pedestrians this fall after more than two years of reconstruction. In October, scores of spectators will cheer on participants in the Budapest Marathon as they run next to and under the famous bridge. It wasn’t long after the pandemic began that people around the world started to notice something weird was going on. As the rhythms of daily life changed, some people’s days seemed to run together; others felt theirs stretched on indefinitely. The sense of what an hour felt like was corroding. Rising from the ashes When bushfires ignited Australia’s third largest island during 2019 and 2020, half of Kangaroo Island burned, killing 40% of its namesake marsupials and an estimated 40,000 koalas. Researchers mourned losses among species like the sooty dunnart, a mouse-size marsupial that lives nowhere else on earth. But visitors to the island will find a landscape lush with greenery, including the Kangaroo Island yucca, whose spiky flowers disappear for decades and bloom only in the wake of fire. With his charming, sympathetic picture The Lost King, Stephen Frears digs into the fairly recent rehabilitation of the misunderstood monarch’s legacy—as well as the 2012 discovery of his long-lost bones beneath a Leicester parking lot. Sally Hawkins plays Philippa Langley, the real-life amateur historian instrumental in figuring out where, exactly, the last Plantagenet King had been buried. Hawkins’ Philippa suffers from chronic fatigue syndrome, an illness that’s not always taken seriously. In the near future imagined by the Apple TV+ sci-fi drama Extrapolations, humans have discovered how to communicate with humpback whales. One scientist, Sienna Miller’s Rebecca Shearer, even translates a female humpback’s song into English via the sonorous voice of Meryl Streep (who also plays Rebecca’s mother). That’s the good news. The bad news is that the creature is the last of its kind. Rebecca works for a company that is scrambling to preserve the genetic footprints of species that are going extinct because of global warming so that they can be reintroduced when someone figures out how to cool the world.
