  • NME Special Collectors' Magazine: MorrisseyIt’s been a weird five years for Morrissey. Since his last album, 2009’s ‘Years Of Refusal’, he’s experienced a series of seemingly irretrievable lows: cancelled shows, a bleeding ulcer, no record deal, quotes from himself saying things like “I’m slightly shocked to have gone as far as I have”. But with the publication of last year’s Autobiography, Morrissey took his first steps on the road that would lead to his musical return. It sold 35,000 copies in its first week, setting a new record for a musician’s memoir, and was, according to the man himself, “more successful than any record I have ever releases”. So as the world readies itself for Morrissey’s 10th album, ‘World Peace Is None Of Your Business’, what better time to celebrate the solo career of the world’s most controversial pop star? In his 26 years as a standalone artist he has triumphed, failed and delighted in equal measure, and over 100 pages of this special tribute magazine we tell the full story. Delving into the NME and Melody Maker archive, we reprint some of his most classic and memorable interviews. We also cast a fresh critical eye over every one of his solo albums, and discuss whether 2014 is his greatest comeback yet.
  • Fabulous FlowersAfter a long winter, there’s nothing quite like the prospect of an abundance of bright, beautiful flowers popping up in the forecast. And whether you’re starting from scratch or adding to a garden you’ve had for years, this is the time to amp up the color with the help of a few seed packets, bulbs and cuttings. But if you’re seeking some inspiration before the perspiration that comes with digging in, look no further. Here, we tour a variety of plots—full sun, partial shade, coastal, sloped and more—and get expert advice about the plants that work best in each. We check in with a couple who grows more than 50 kinds of roses and another gardener who has a fair number of butterfly- attracting monarda. We even pop by a “kid-friendly” space where hardy-but-handsome flowers bravely stand by a soccer goal. In short, we’ve got time- tested flower solutions that are right for almost any problem area, so that you, too, can stop and smell the roses (or dahlias or geraniums)!
  • The Goonies Fan GuideIn a chaotic sea of familiar sequels, remakes and movies based on popular toys and video games, a singular, original film from the 1980s sails smoothly into our hearts. The Goonies is a wildly imaginative movie that’s equal parts crime caper, juvenile teen comedy, action-adventure, romance, social statement and family crowd-pleaser. There’s even a jump scare in the reveal of John Matuszak’s Sloth, and all of it is set to a cool pop soundtrack led by Cyndi Lauper. But the reason the Steven Spielberg-produced, Richard Donner-directed and Chris-Columbus-penned movie endures is the friendship between misfit kids at the center of it all. In The Unofficial Fan Guide to The Goonies, we trace the origins of the film, reveal behind-the-scenes stories of its creation, see where the cast are now and speculate on a possible sequel. There’s even a special pirate-worthy foldout for you to discover!

  • Good Housekeeping Summer Mediterranean DietYear after year, the Mediterranean diet is ranked as one of the top diets by a panel of health experts at U.S. News & World Report, and an overwhelming amount of research shows it can lead to sustainable weight loss, improve heart health and brain function, and even prevent chronic conditions like diabetes and cancer. Maybe it’s because the Mediterranean diet doesn’t fit into the restrictive calorie-driven framework of an actual “diet.” But it’s not quite as simple as chowing down on pasta, pizza, and hummus, either. Here’s everything you need to know to embrace the number diet in the world.
  • Spaces Volume 6SPACES Volume 6 by frankie magazine decided to stay close to home for this issue – not that we had much say in the matter, to be honest. But we had just the best time in our travels around Australia, visiting lots of lovely people at home and in their work places, from the city to the outback and all sorts of spots in between. We also popped in on some clever folk who have made the most of the tiniest of places, and some who spend their time with flowers, bees and other living things. Along the way, we picked up loads of great tips on everything from putting on a backyard festival to painting a mural. We also had a chance to think about the fact that, now, where we live seems even more important than ever to all of us. We reckon that’s worth celebrating.

  • Military Planes of World War IIWorld War II was neither fought, nor won, entirely by aircraft. But the introduction of advanced aerial technology that began in the late 1930s came of age during the landmark conflict, transforming the landscape of war forever. By the end of WWII, the United States alone had amassed a fleet of 300,000 planes—from fighters to scouts to bombers—spread across the Air Force, Navy, and Marines. This book includes 30 historic examples. Understanding the stories behind each of these planes is to appreciate how history’s most examined war was won.
  • Survive & Thrive Off The GridMOST OF US DREAM OF BECOMING A LITTLE more self-sufficient. That might mean something as simple as growing basil in the kitchen window or as complicated as canning all of the vegetables you’ll eat for the year. For my family,it means building 4’ x 8’ raised garden beds on our small backyardin southeast Wyoming and learning how to grow heat-loving plants like tomatoes and peppers at 7,220 feet. It means spending April and May chasing turkeys through the woods and raising seedlings that we’ll move outdoors when the frosts are gone. It also means thoughtfully eating what wild game remains in our freezer from the fall before. But after a dozen or more years eating almost exclusively wild game, we found ourselves in a rut. My husband and I skillfully slice, package and freeze roasts, stew meat, steaks and hamburger, and most years we make our own sausage. It wasn’t until I interviewed California wild game chef and wild food forager Hank Shaw that I truly considered the many ways I could expand our wild game repertoire. I never thought about salvaging and eating the kidneys, for example, or shanks as something other than a hassle that ends in the grinder. We use the pages of this magazine to go through the best ways to preserve the meats and vegetables you’ll eat throughout the year. We also offer some ingenious, albeit labor- intensive, ways to make your own tools for harvesting wild foods. Think of this issue as your guide for beginning a more sustainable life, or continuing your journey to sustainability. I know I will be following many of these ideas for years to come.

  • Ghosts - True Tales Of HorrorI woke up and saw a female spirit standing on my boyfriend’s side of the bed." "The cats would not go up the stairs...sometimes they hiss at something out of nowhere." More than two out of five Americans believe in ghosts, and nearly one in five claim they've encountered one themselves. And the rest of us are morbidly curious about it, judging from the wild success of dramatizations of spirit encounters through shows like Netflix's Paranormal and movies like Spirited. Just in time for Halloween, we present an organized collection of compelling ghost stories, tales of haunted houses, energy orb sightings, and other unexplained phenomena, and bring some science to bear. Do our dead really still live among us in a shadowy alternate state...and if not, what in the world is actually going on?
