Very often, students can solve math problems, however, when asked to explain their "thinking," or how they arrived at the solution, they are unable to do so. Responses can be scattered or very broad in scope with little attention to details. It becomes even more intimidating when students are required to express their thought processes in writing! Executive functioning skills are the mental processes that help us accomplish daily tasks and meet our goals. The questions focus on the 10 main areas of executive functioning: planning, organization, time management, task initiation, working memory, metacognition, attention, flexibility and perseverance. Some ways you can use these questions include: • Use one question as a "question of the day" for group discussion. • Have students respond to questions through daily journal writing. • Have students discuss questions in partners or small groups. • Set up 10 "centers" (one for each executive functioning area).
