The botanic name tells us a lot about this celebrity superfood. Chenopodium is the genus name for goosefoot, a weed of the amaranth family. TURNING JAPANESE University of Southern Queensland’s (USQ) Japanese Garden, also known as Ju Raku En, is one of Australia’s largest and most traditionally designed Japanese stroll gardens. Ju Raku En (roughly translated as “to enjoy peace and longevity in a public place”) was opened on 21st April, 1989, by Yoshiharu Araki from the Brisbane Consul-General of Japan. Located on 3ha on the northern side of USQ Toowoomba, the site is jointly owned by USQ and the Toowoomba Regional Council. This outstanding garden features a mountain stream and waterfall, dry garden, central lake, 3km of paths and 230 species of Japanese and Australian native trees and plants. It looks like an ordinary suburban house on a busy street just 7km north-west of Melbourne’s CBD. But behind the low brick fence and newly planted citrus are not only thriving vegetable gardens and more fruit trees, but also a fish farm teeming with around 150 trout. Robert Kershaw’s block is only 400sqm, but just about all of it not occupied by the house is given over to food production. Besides the fish and some chickens, Robert says the family grows “a huge variety of fruit, vegetables and herbs: zucchini, lettuce, corn, tomatoes, pumpkins, potatoes, strawberries, raspberries, rosemary, lemongrass, coriander, basil, beans, grapes, apples, lemons, oranges, mandarins, bananas, Kaffir and Persian limes, and rhubarb”. It is always exciting to see a garden for the first time and immediately recognise it holds a lot of promise. This Federation home in Kensington is just south of Sydney’s city centre. Our clients were living overseas and we were briefed on one of their visits home. Though the European honey bee takes most of the credit for pollinating our crops and gardens, we have at least 1500 and possibly up to 3000 species of native bees. Of these, only about 16 species are social; the rest are solitary or semi-social creatures living near each other. Recent studies show that native pollinators are twice as effective as the honey bee at pollinating flowers, including those of food crops.
