Security experts in the US have suggested that Christians giving up porn websites for Lent has led to a sharp fall in malware. The number of malware infections dropped by 17 per cent in the US between 14 February (beginning of Lent) and late March. US cybersecurity firm Enigma Software Group said this could be because fewer people were visiting porn sites, which are believed to be the most common source of malware. Enigma spokesman Ryan Gerding added that many people also give up social-media sites during this period. Malware also dropped during Lent last year (by 14 per cent), lending weight to the theory. “As soon as Easter is over, it goes right back up again,” said Gerding. Enigma also looked at malware trends during Lent for several US…

Mobile network provider EE has claimed to have eliminated 12,000 square kilometres of 4G ‘not spots’ in the last 12 months – equivalent to about 1.5 million football pitches. The company has upgraded 4,000 existing sites, and added 105 new masts, providing mobile coverage to some parts of the UK for the first time. As a result, says EE, over 200 emergency calls were made that previously weren’t possible. Remote areas of Scotland, such as the Isle of Skye, have benefited most. However, overall coverage in Scotland is still only 75 per cent, which is significantly below the UK average of 90 per cent. I couldn’t stop laughing reading ‘Question of the Fortnight’ in Issue 524 (‘Will 5G revolution cut your council tax bills?’). It was an interesting piece, but O2’s prediction of a hi-tech future, with councils saving millions of pounds using 5G, is pie in the sky. Before councils start wasting money on magical ‘smart’ bins that talk to each other, how about they fix the potholes on my road that rattle my bones every time I drive? The problem with technological advances is that ‘experts’ always race ahead of what the public actually wants. They become bewitched by the fanciful potential of technology, avoiding more urgent - and more mundane - problems like potholes. Put me down as a 5G sceptic.…

It always astonishes us how some retailers think they can impose their own version of the law on customers. Based on emails from readers, Carphone Warehouse is often guilty of this. As we reported in Issue 523, reader Sophie Rougier was told by the retailer it wouldn’t refund her the £200 she spent on a Samsung J3 2017 phone, after she had problems connecting it to her Netgear router. At first, she thought the phone was incompatible with the router, but Netgear said this was unlikely. It called her problem “unique”, and agreed to investigate. It seemed more probable that the phone was inherently faulty, in which case – under the Consumer Rights Act – Sophie would have been entitled to a full refund because she complained about it within…

ANDROID & iOS Find the quickest route if you have mobility problems Google recently added ‘wheelchair support’ as a new category in Google Maps. This feature is great for finding the quickest way to get from A to B if you have limited mobility. At present, the feature is only available in London in the UK, but Google has promised to add more locations soon. To use the feature, open Google Maps (default on Android; iOS www.snipca.com/27373), type your destination in the search bar at the top, then select the correct autosuggest option in the list. Next, tap the Directions button at the bottom, then Options at the top right. If your route caters for wheelchairs, you’ll see the option under Routes at the bottom (see screenshot below left). WINDOWS 10 Shut down your PC using your voice One of the lesser-known features of Microsoft’s personal voice assistant Cortana is the ability to switch off, restart, sign out of and lock your PC. To execute these voice commands, you first need to ensure that Cortana is enabled. Open the Settings app, then click Cortana. Here, click the Hey Cortana slider to switch it on (see screenshot below). The sliders below (‘Keyboard shortcut’ and ‘Lock Screen’) let you launch Cortana by pressing Windows key+C, and use it when your PC is locked. To tell your PC what to do, open Cortana by saying ‘Hey Cortana’ or by using the keyboard shortcut, then say ‘Hey Cortana, shut down/sign out of/restart/lock my PC’. If you’d like to have books read to you, you can use a third-party plug-in for the task. Download ‘TTS Ebook Viewer.zip’ from www.snipca.com/27294, but don’t click it. Instead, in Calibre click the arrow next to Preferences and select ‘Change Calibre behaviour’. In the window that opens, click Plug-ins under Advanced, then click ‘Load plug-in from file’. Navigate to the saved ZIP file, select it and click Open. Click Yes to the warning, then OK. Restart Calibre, and open a book as if you were about to read it. For many of our tips you’ll need to balance privacy with convenience. This isn’t a question of tech companies being difficult – some features just need data to work. For example, if you turn off Google’s location tracking, Google Maps won’t know where you are. Or browse in private mode and you’ll have to log into sites every time, and you won’t be able to refer to your browsing history if you forget where you spotted something. HTTPS Everywhere forces sites to open in their most secure version, but still loads insecure pages, unless you set it to ‘Block all unencrypted requests’. £4M SPENT ONLINE IN 2017 ELECTION Political parties spent over £4m on adverts on Facebook and Google during the 2017 general election campaign, figures from the Electorial Commission show. All parties spent far more on Facebook than on Google. The Conservatives top the list, spending £2.1m on Facebook and £562,000 on Google, dwarfing Labour’s outlay of £577,000 and £255,000. All National Lottery customers have been urged to change their passwords after suspicious activity was spotted in 150 accounts. Camelot, the Lottery’s parent company, emailed customers to say that the affected accounts had been “subject to an unauthorised log-in and that very limited information may have been viewed”. It added it was “taking all the necessary steps to fully understand what has happened”, noting that the vast majority of accounts - 10.5 million - weren’t affected. It came as no surprise when the Government postponed the introduction of age checks for porn websites (Issue 524, News, page 9). As a campaigner for child safety online, I fear that this delay will turn into a complete U-turn, with the Government abandoning the proposal totally, under pressure from privacy zealots and the porn industry itself. The objection made to online regulations like these always focuses on how hard they will be to implement. The magic word ‘unworkable’ is always used. When experts declare something ‘unworkable’, the Government usually buckles. But what these experts really mean (but would never say) is that the regulations will eat into their profits too much. I live in perpetual fear of forgetting my passwords, because I know what a gigantic pain it can be to recover them. So my heart sank when my laptop died recently (my fault, I spilt a vase of water over it - my Mother’s Day daffodils went everywhere). I always relied on Chrome remembering all my passwords on that laptop. I should have made a note of them, but never got round to it. How do I get quicker broadband using 3G? Q We have two homes: a park home Monday to Thursday and a static caravan for the weekends, so instead of broadband we use a mobile tariff with a 30GB data allowance. Almost half of online GPs aren’t safe, with many prescribing dangerous drugs too freely, inspectors have said. The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has investigated the private online market over the past 18 months, scrutinising 35 companies running services in England. These services offer video appointments through websites or apps, and enable patients to reorder prescriptions online. During the inspection five companies ceased trading, while 13 broke safety rules, although none were named in the CQC’s report. It identified several problems, including the large amount of opioid-based painkillers prescribed. These can be highly addictive, particularly if not combined with a plan to ease patients off them. Export/import your ebook library If you’ve spent some time building up a library in Calibre, the last thing you’d want to happen is to lose it as a result of hard-drive failure or accidental deletion. You can back up your library for safe keeping (or copying to another location) by clicking the arrow next to Calibre Library in the top menu bar, then selecting ‘Export/Import all calibre data’ (see screenshot below). Why won’t Ultimate Windows Tweaker run? QI’d given up on computer magazines, because they’ve become overpriced and filled with a ridiculous amounts of adverts. I like Computeractive because it’s reasonably priced, covers a wide range of operating systems, and offers product reviews and help pages for readers. With the latter in mind it’s my turn to ask for aid. I downloaded Ultimate Windows Tweaker (UWT) 4.4.1, as recommended in Issue 522’s Best Free Software (page 18). Unfortunately, I can’t get it to run. Windows displays a message asking for permission to run the program but, after clicking Yes, nothing happens. Any ideas?
