More than 50 MPs have said phone networks should be forced to improve their 4G coverage across the UK to boost access in rural areas. The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Rural Services sent a letter to digital secretary Matt Hancock saying EE, O2, Three and Vodafone should be legally obliged to deliver mobile coverage to 95 per cent of the UK’s landmass by the end of 2022. The Government declared this ambition in December, estimating it would add £75 billion to UK GDP. However, regulator Ofcom says only 57 per cent of premises in rural areas can make calls on all four networks, compared with 90 per cent in towns and cities. The NHS has warned patients they may lose alerts about doctor and hospital appointments now that GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) has come into force. GDPR, which became law on 25 May, gives all EU citizens the right to know what personal data companies and organisations store on them. If they breach the regulations, they face fines of up to €20m (£17.5m) or four per cent of global turnover. To comply, companies, charities and public bodies have been asking people whether they want to continue to receive their emails and text messages. If customers fail to reply, they’re taken off companies’ lists. It has resulted in many users receiving hundreds of emails. Adults who want to watch porn online will be able to prove their age by buying codes from newsagents. Under forthcoming laws over-18s will be required to confirm their age to access porn sites. The legislation, part of the Digital Economy Act 2017, is aimed at preventing children encountering sexually explicit content. A 2016 NSPCC survey found that just under half of 11-16 year olds had seen porn online. That rises to two-thirds of 15-16 year olds. Adults will also be able to prove their age by entering credit-card or driving-licence details, but privacy campaigners have slammed this idea as being a hacker’s dream, warning it could leave users open to blackmail. I’ve had a couple of Bad Tech Days. I visited a branch of Currys/PC World to buy a TV set. The model I wanted wasn’t in stock, so the very helpful assistant suggested I order it online and have it delivered to the store the next day. But the computer wanted to verify my card and the screen just turned white. The assistant tried again, with the same result. I queried if two TVs had now been ordered, but was told the payments hadn’t gone through. I then bought the TV online at home. I went to the store to collect it where, sure enough, there were three of them! I only took one and the assistant said I’d be refunded when the others were returned to the depot. I…

My Toshiba 4TB X300 hard drive (pictured) failed about 15 months after I bought it from an Amazon Marketplace seller. Because it was still under a two-year warranty I contacted Toshiba, rather then go through the seller. I emailed them through their online contact form, and they replied two days later telling me to use the warranty form on their site. I filled it out with the drive’s make, and model and serial number. Then I printed the return label and shipped it to Germany (they didn’t ask for proof of purchase). I received a new hard drive a few days later. It was absolutely brilliant customer service, and didn’t cost me a penny. I wish all companies were as good as this. Switched on to TV scam In May scammers rang me to say my BT TV subscription had expired and I was due an equipment upgrade. The speaker (female) had an Indian accent. I am a BT customer, but I hung up and did some research online. Action Fraud (www.snipca.com/27749) had a report about the scam, though didn’t mention BT specifically. I read elsewhere that Sky and Virgin customers are also being targeted. This scam could prove effective if it goes after older people who haven’t been subscribers to these services for long, and don’t fully understand how they work. It’s one of a number of new Coffee Lake chips that are coming out as part of the company’s eighth generation of Core processors (pictured). Why would I want it? To do more on the move. WINDOWS 7, 8.1, 10 Create a Notepad file listing items in any folder There’s an easy way to create a list of all the files in any folder on your PC using Command Prompt or PowerShell (depending on which Windows version you use). This method saves a list of all items within any folder as a Notepad file, which is useful if you’d like to see its contents at a glance. BT has launched the UK’s first joint broadband and 4G package, promising to keep you connected when there are problems with your service. Called BT Plus, the new deal guarantees you free unlimited mobile data if your broadband goes down, giving you continued access to the internet. The company said it will switch on mobile data within a hour of you contacting them, and send a free 4G Wi-Fi Mini Hub to arrive the next day. The 4G is provided by EE, which BT bought for £12.5bn in 2016. BT Plus customers will receive just one bill for both broadband and mobile. Customers can buy a broadband-mobile bundle, or broadband first, then add mobile data later. BT Plus bundles start from £61.99 a month for 18 months, then rise to…

Google has launched a new offline mode for Gmail, letting you use it when not connected to the internet. Previously, you had to add the Gmail Offline extension (www.snipca.com/27863) to do this. When offline you’ll be able to write emails, search your inbox and delete or archive messages. Your activity will be synchronised with Gmail when you next go online. This means emails you write offline will be kept in an Outbox folder, then automatically sent when you’re next connected to the web. It works only in the Chrome browser, however. To access the tool, which is being rolled out over the next few weeks, you’ll need to make sure you’re using the new version of Gmail. Click the top-right Settings cog, then ‘Try the new Gmail’. WARNING: JUNK AHEAD Junk offender: Memory Optimizer 2 “Memory Optimizer 2 takes a few seconds to clean up your RAM,” (quote-unquotes the program’s website, www.snipca.com/27926). “As a result your Windows PC runs smoother and faster – all within just a couple of clicks,” it adds. This impartial recommendation from, er, the company’s marketing director sounds great, doesn’t it? Except that, “as a result” of installing Memory Optimizer 2, you could wind up handing over your PC’s processing power and your bandwidth to complete strangers. ‘Name and shame’ drivers caught using phones I support the RAC’s call for the Government to introduce cameras that take photos of motorists using phones (News, Issue 528, page 7). I’d go further and suggest that these photos be put online in a gallery to name and shame those breaking the law. If, as surveys suggest, half of drivers use phones, clearly the law isn’t a strong enough deterrent. Perhaps being humiliated online would be more effective. It would also help to make this dangerous practise appear less socially acceptable. Can Dell ignore faulty laptop after three repairs? Q In 2015, I bought a Dell XPS 15 laptop. After two weeks the touchscreen developed a fault. Dell had to replace this three times, but now the battery has swollen, pushing the keyboard and screen out of line. Dell refuses to help because the laptop’s out of warranty. What are my rights? WATCH OUT FOR… GDPR-related phishing scams What’s the threat? Cyber-criminals are sending fake GDPR-related emails hoping to trick people into revealing personal data. Implemented on 25 May, GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) is major EU-wide legislation that gives you more say about how and where your data is used. To comply with the law, companies are emailing customers asking them to ‘re-consent’ to receive further messages. Fraudsters are exploiting this to send emails pretending to be a company’s official request for reconsent. They urge customers to click links then submit personal details. In one scam, spotted by UK security company Redscan, customers of property-rental service Airbnb are told they couldn’t take any more bookings until they accept its new privacy policy. NiCad battery WHAT WAS IT? Batteries with nickel and cadmium electrodes, invented by Waldemar Jungner in 1899, were the first type of alkaline battery. Sealed versions were used from the mid-20th century for kit such as two-way radios and aircraft equipment. In the 1980s, their light weight and long life made NiCad cells the standard choice for portable digital products. They were used in laptops (like the Toshiba model pictured) and other gadgets into the 1990s. HOW HAVE THINGS CHANGED? NiCads had drawbacks. Windows has accumulated a lot of handy features over the years, but many of them are so buried in the bowels of the operating system you could use your PC for years and never know they were there. Microsoft has once again claimed that laptop batteries last longer when browsing the web in Edge, outlasting Chrome and Firefox. It posted a video on YouTube (www.snipca.com/27950, pictured) showing three “identical” Surface laptops streaming the same video, with one running in Edge, one in Chrome, the other in Firefox. The laptop running edge Edge lasted over 14 hours, beating the one running Chrome (12 hours) and Firefox (seven). However, Microsoft admits - in small print at the bottom - that the results may vary on other devices, and that battery life overall depends on “settings, usage and other factors”. Robots will start looking after elderly people in care homes in a trial scheme relatives say lacks the “human touch”. From September Advinia Health Care, working with Bedfordshire University, will use the four-foot humanoid Pepper robot (pictured) in some of its 38 care homes across the UK. The robot, built by Japanese company SoftBank, uses artificial intelligence to adapt to the specific needs of the person it’s caring for. Screens on the robot’s chest will allow residents to contact family via Skype, and provide reminders of when to take medication. It can even tailor its conversation to match different personalities. Here’s a little story. Once upon a time in Latvia, there lived a helpful young chap called Ruslan. He felt sorry for all the busy, overworked malware creators of the world and decided to co-create a counter-antivirus (CAV) website called Scan4You (pictured), to help them make sure their viruses and other nasty programs could evade security software. Cyber-crooks could upload samples of their malicious code to the site, which would analyse them against the latest security tools. Ruslan’s site helped create lots of malware, including the Citadel botnet, used to hack the US retail company Target in 2013 and steal millions of users’ credit-card details. There’s a flaw in Clive Biggs’s defence of personalised adverts online (Star Letter, Issue 528). I continue to see adverts for items I’ve already bought or places I’ve just visited. Last year, I bought a lawnmower online. For months afterwards all I saw were adverts for other lawnmowers. Why would I buy two? I recently spent a weekend in a Suffolk cottage. Ever since, adverts for other cottages have been stalking me. I love visiting Suffolk, but once a year is enough. Chrome, Firefox and Opera are all great browsers, but they leave too much of the security work to you. To protect your privacy you have to turn on numerous settings and install extensions. Not so with Avast Secure Browser (the new name for SafeZone), which has been built to provide maximum protection from the moment you install it. When you open it click Avast’s logo at the top right to launch the Security & Privacy Center (change it to ‘Centre’ by clicking the Options button then selecting ‘English United Kingdom’). How can I clone my hard drive to an SSD? Q I have used Samsung SSDs in the past and the cloning software that came with them worked perfectly. However, it only works with Samsung SSDs, as I found when I bought a cheaper Western Digital SSD for an old laptop. Samsung’s software won’t let me move data to the WD drive. Attach emails to emails Email providers often ‘clip’ forwarded emails so that the recipient only sees the first few lines. To ensure your recipient sees the whole message, send it as an attachment instead. This is easy in Outlook thanks to Microsoft’s EML (email) file format, which can be read in Outlook, Mail and Notepad. Open the email you want to forward, click More, then ‘Forward as Attachment’ (or press Ctrl+Alt+F) to save it as EML and automatically attach it to a new message (see screenshot below).
