He’s been leading a race across a frozen lake, gunning his ramshackle engine to the limit only to fishtail into a corner. Now, after wrestling madly with the steering wheel to regain control, his car is wedged into the snow and facing the wrong direction. “Vittu, vittu, vittu,” shouts the 16-year-old in Finnish (best translated as ‘fuck, fuck, fuck!’). By the age of eight, Bing Liu had lived in Beijing, Alabama and South Central LA before settling in the rust belt city of Rockford, Illinois. British fencer Teagan Williams-Stewart is sitting in her kitchen, trying to express how much she loves winning. You don’t choose your name as a hobo. You earn it. Steven Boutwell gained his while working with another travelling kid on farms in Washington State. Something about his adventurous spirit and southern drawl inspired the boy to start calling him Huckleberry, after the Mark Twain character. “He pegged me pretty easy with the name,” Huck says now. “I eventually said, ‘You have to drop the ‘berry’ part, so call me Huck or something.’ Then you go to another town and the name just comes with you.” Huck is a hobo, one of America’s modern-day vagabonds who travel the States by hitchhiking and hopping trains with no set job or home. Smoking cigarettes at a high altitude, without water or food, is a poor decision. This was a lesson Shehrbano Saiyid learned the hard way 6,000 metres up in Pakistani’s Karakoram mountain range. While descending the northern peak Manglik Sar, she began to feel ill from the elevation on an empty stomach. Shehrbano ate some snow and just about mustered the energy to continue, only to realise that she and her crew were on track to complete the summit and descent in just nine intense hours. Shehrbano was the slowest of the nine women coming back down that morning, but without her they wouldn’t have been climbing the mountain at all. As a 13-year-old, Nabihah Iqbal would make routine weekend pilgrimages from her home in London’s Regents Park to Camden. There, she’d spend the afternoon shopping for outlandish outfits (she was in the midst of a grunge phase, so only baggy trousers would do) before eventually blagging her way into punk and ska gigs in the evening. “I think maybe I looked old for my age,” she recalls, grinning. “Or they just didn’t check ID.” Either way, those scheduled trips proved formative.
