The world has been ablaze with talk of the Meltdown and Spectre bugs, but what are they, and how do they affect you? The vulnerabilities first came to light on 3 January 2018, when they were made public in the media. Affected hardware and software vendors had been made aware of the issues in the summer of 2017, but had been unable to release security patches in time. Meltdown and Spectre are security vulnerabilities in the architectural design of modern CPUs. If taken advantage of, they could allow an application to read any information stored in your device’s memory, whether its authorised to or not. That is, of course, a very serious weakness. Apple only recently unveiled its new iPhone design with the iPhone X, and it looks like there is already a tweak on the way. When Apple launched its newest phone last year, it replaced Touch ID with new facial recognition tech called Face ID. Apple said the technology offers a much more secure system than Touch ID. According to South Korea’s ETNews, LG Innotec, the company that makes the depthsensing system in the iPhone X, has invested $821 billion to improve the sensor array. Significantly, ETNews suggests that an updated version of the sensor could take the form of a combined camera and facial recognition module on the front of the phone. Pages packs a punch when it comes to word processing. Here’s how to use its tools to powerful effect, controlling how text flows around images, making docs non-linear with hyperlinks, and personalising the docs you create. 1 Create and apply styles Styles make it very easy to quickly change text attributes throughout a doc. Pages provides several default styles, or you can create your own: select some text, click the paintbrush icon in the toolbar to open the Format inspector and open its Style tab. Set a font, size, weight and other attributes, click the arrow next to the current style name at the top of the inspector, and click the + at the top right of the list. There’s nothing inherently wrong with Open and Save dialogs – they do the job. But Default Folder X offers something better – a kind of ‘pro’ take on this aspect of working with your Mac. Mostly, this involves providing fast access to useful tools and saved files, in order to boost efficiency. Much of this happens by way of a frame Default Folder X adds to the aforementioned dialogs. According to a recent patent application, Apple may be working on a long-range wireless charger. The radio-frequency based system has a few clever tricks up itssleeve, too. For one thing, the patent states that the charger could gather information from your iPhone and Apple account (potentially iCloud) and use this to predict your usage patterns, then distribute power accordingly. In other words, the charger could send enough power to your iPhone to get it through the day based on how you use it, then automatically switch to charging your iPad. Almost nothing makes us happier that we’re not forced to use PCs than Keynote. It’s far more pleasant to use than PowerPoint. Here are our favourite features that’ll power up your presentations! 1 Use two or more screens With your MacBook connected to a projector or TV, you can mirror what’s on it to the external screen, or, using System Preferences > Displays and Keynote’s preferences, show your presentation on the external and other stuff on the Mac’s screen – a timer, notes, the next slide, and so on. However, much of the world uses Microsoft Office and Google Docs, so here are tips to ensure your docs work for other people. 1 Line management When converting an iWork doc to an Office format, text reflow is inevitable. Stick to common fonts to mitigate this and, because Pages and Word interpret lines and paragraphs differently, you’ll get better results if you set line and paragraph spacing in fixed point sizes rather than relative measures. 2 Translation issues Apple’s apps work well with Office docs – comments and tracked changes transfer seamlessly – but there are gaps. Sharing a calendar using iCloud is a great way of organising family life, work projects or regular events with friends. There are two distinct types of shared calendar: public and private. The key difference between the two is that public calendars can only be edited by the calendar owner. Private calendars can be edited by the owner or anyone to whom the owner grants specific permission. Invitees with editing privileges can create, edit and delete events, and track invitation responses. Both public and private calendars can be viewed in the Calendar app on a Mac or iOS device and in Microsoft Outlook on a Windows PC. Damaged file and high CPU use Q I ran EtreCheck because of performance issues, and it tells me that mdworker(13) is the ‘top process by CPU’ with 56%. Strange alert from a website Q When visiting a website, a peculiar transparent alert appeared over Safari’s window, warning that a ‘System Scan is recommended’. Apple is the most successful company on the planet, but it’s no stranger to controversy. Cast your mind back to the removal of the iPhone’s headphone jack or the floppy drive from the original iMac for just two examples of righteous anger on an epic scale.
