Apple’s control of the App Store has lessened, and has been reflected in updated App Store Guidelines. These now permit developers to contact users regarding payment methods outside the App Store. This means that devs could point users towards cheaper prices on their own websites where they need not pay Apple’s App Store commission. The change comes after Apple was forced to settle a court case in August 2021. The case was brought by a group of developers in 2019 who alleged that Apple’s policies prohibiting them from directing users towards cheaper prices off the App Store were a monopoly on the distribution and purchase of apps. Apple settled that case for $100 million and has now updated its guidelines. Specifically, Apple has deleted a clause from guideline 3.1.3 that…

The latest iPadOS introduces a new way to get organised on your favourite tablet, bringing iOS 14 features to the iPad for the first time. Our favourite new feature is widgets, which have made it across from the iPhone. These can sit anywhere on your Home Screen to provide instant access to whatever you like: Calendar events, the weather forecast, your Apple Music playlist, your favourite photos and so on. As your Mac’s internal storage starts to fill up, it can become quite the job identifying what’s taking up the most space – and, crucially, where it resides on its hard drive or SSD. What happens with writeable files? Q I’ve read that macOS Monterey’s system is kept in a snapshot which can’t be changed. So how does it keep writable files like caches, and how is it updated? by ALEX BARNES A Catalina divided the startup volume into two, one for the System and the other for Data. Just a decade ago, this test would have been purely about sound quality but now smart network features also play a significant role. So the balance comes down to those two factors, and price. One of the most important changes for the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro laptops comes to the chips powering them. The M1 Pro and M1 Max are the fastest chips Apple has made so far – and some of the fastest chips available in any laptop. The iPad has become more T powerful over the years, and as it has, talk about iPadOS and macOS merging has intensified. The discussion reached fever pitch when Apple put its M1 chip into the iPad Pro, meaning the tablet contained the same System on a Chip that features in a variety of recent Macs. With iPadOS 15, Apple has paid a lot of attention to productivity. In particular, it’s beefed up the Notes app to make it easier to record, find and share things, and there’s a new feature called Quick Note that enables you to add a note from anywhere without having to leave the app you’re in. The main Notes app’s biggest change is in its use of tags. Now you can tag a note by typing the hash (#) symbol before it and Notes will automatically add that tag to the sidebar, underneath the Folders list – so if you tag phone-related things #iPhone, you can tap on that tag to see all those posts instantly. Thanks to our iPhone camera app’s Smart HDR feature, we can capture great photos even in contrasting lighting conditions (such as shooting a backlit subject). However, some shots will still benefit from a few post-production tweaks in an app like Camera+ Studio to reveal more colour and detail. Apple has been steadily improving its built-in apps over the last few years. Having made big changes to Messages and FaceTime, Notes hasn’t been left out. While plenty of users love it, the iPad mini has arguably always been a bit of an odd-one-out in Apple’s product line-up. Apple has updated the MacBook Pro with its first major redesign since 2016. A 14-inch MacBook Pro has been added to the range, while the 16-inch MacBook Pro has received the same design rethink as its smaller sibling. In many ways, the overhaul is a repudiation of that 2016 model. Instead of bearing only USB-C ports, there are now MagSafe, HDMI, and SD card slots. The machine now possesses a little extra heft to accommodate more powerful components and cooling systems. And gone is the Touch Bar, the touch-sensitive control strip. Apple’s AirPods are undoubtedly popular, but their long stems have always marked them out as being different from the high-end AirPods Pro, which possess somewhat stubbier stems. Now, AirPods have been given an overhaul, bringing them much more in line with their premium cousins in terms of design. With AirPods in your ears, it is now hard to tell them apart from AirPods Pro. Apple’s Notes app has had something of a chequered history. It started out as a very basic tool for taking notes on an iPhone or iPad, arriving on the Mac with Mountain Lion, but offered very little in comparison to third-party notes apps.
