SHE SCULPTS SEASHELLS BY THE SEASHORE SEASHELL SCULPTURES Finders keepers … American artist Anna Chan creates animal-inspired sculptures using seashells and pebbles found on her local beach. Chan began doing beachside artwork with her 10-year-old daughter for fun. But she enjoyed it so much that she started working on the art at home. Chan gathers shells and uses them to form creatures on a canvas of sand in her art studio. Her first sculpture was a turtle. SUPER SHOWCASE That’s where greening fairs come in. These big gatherings (also known as conferences) introduce new ways of doing things to help the environment! You might learn how to plant a bird- or insect-friendly garden. Or you might be exposed to cutting-edge architecture that uses less energy for heating and cooling. There are big and small ideas—for individuals, companies, and countries. WHAT IS GREENING? “Greening” means to change a business or process to make it more environmentally friendly, or sustainable. A sustainable process can be done endlessly without running out of resources or damaging the environment.…

OWL: Can you tell us about your business, the Wormery? DAN LIZMORE: It was a harebrained scheme that went very well! We’ve always had to use fertilizers [for the landscaping business], but synthetic fertilizers are not good for the world. We saw all this green waste [leftover food] from farmers’ markets and restaurants and decided to attempt to compost it into our own fertilizer. OWL: How does the process work? DL: We work with green organic waste [leftover food and certain yard waste]. We run that through our composting bins [dark containers that speed up the decomposing process] for about eight weeks. When the compost is ready, it goes to the worm tables [where the worms live] in the basement. We have about 360 kg (800 lb.) of worms, and…
