Brilliant article in MCN about the legendary Stan Stephens (MCN, November 21). The article made me all misty-eyed and rolled the clock back to those classic two-stroke days. I say 'legend' as that word is often banded around too much but the likes of Stan, Leon Moss of Ledar and John Robinson (ex-PB technical guru) truly were legends (there are plenty more to list) of motorcycle knowledge and mechanics. It’s been a tough year for road racing, but it will bounce back. It always does. It’s been in this situation before. I can remember back in the 1980s when some people were calling road racing too dangerous, saying the bikes were getting too fast. Phil Read criticised it, Agostini criticised it and the TT stopped being a world championship race, but it’s still going. A 250 mile-plus trip is a lot for an electric bike and your eyes are glued to the Zero’s dash, keeping check of battery life and range indicators. Horizontal ‘output’ bars ascend as the load on the motor increases, so the trick is to ride as frugally as possible, with only one or two bars showing, but ride it with a heavy right hand and both drop like a stone. “Barber Vintage Motorsports museum is the only place like it in the whole world,” says Communications Manager Kelly Stewart. “Period. Forés was left without a WSB ride despite leading numerous races and securing five podiums in 2018. There may finally be light at the end of the tunnel for the Yamaha MotoGP duo of Valentino Rossi and Maverick Viñales, after the end of season test at Valencia last week finally brought the pair some of the improvements they’ve been hunting for two years. Working with not one but two new specs of engine at Valencia, both riders were upbeat. Ducati boss Claudio Domenicali has revealed the firm are planning a tide of new models buoyed by the success of their new Panigale V4. ‘29 new bikes over the next five years’ ‘R is our most advanced bike’ ‘Electrics? A 110-mile battery range isn’t the end of the world, but finding somewhere to recharge the Zero on our 250 route takes planning. You’ve probably noticed the odd charging station here and there, but when you actually look they’re dotted quite liberally around the UK in motorway services, town centre and hotel car parks and managed by companies such as Polar, Ultracharge and Ecotricity. Moto2’s new Triumph engine received almost universal approval first time out in testing at Jerez, with riders raving about the new 765cc unit that replaced Honda’s CBR600-based engine after a decade of service. During the three-day test lap times fell with many teams under the lap record. The three-cylinder engine was chosen in a bid to reinvigorate the class by changing riding styles. With more capacity but one less cylinder, the Triumph not only makes around 15bhp more than the Honda, but gives a significant increase in torque, too. That means riding styles should be closer to MotoGP’s heavy braking and accelerating, and so be a better stepping stone to the premier class. Kawasaki’s W800 retro roadster is back and it made its European debut at Motorcycle Live last Thursday ahead of its expected arrival in UK dealers in late March. While often overlooked in favour of more overtly modern and powerful retro offerings, the old W800, last in the range in 2016, was actually one of the more authentic and endearing roadsters in the retro market. Its pleasingly soft power delivery and minimalist styling gave a real feel of the 1960s, but without the dripping oil, kickstarter-sprained ankles and unreliability issues. The celebrity-packed, all-action Thunderdrome makes its comeback at the Carole Nash MCN London Motorcycle Show from February 15-17. The Michelin Thunderdrome is a blur of sliding bikes and star riders battling it out over three days of exciting elbow-to-elbow race action. Inspired by the spectacular all-wooden boardtrack race circuits of the early 1900s, the Michelin Thunderdrome features a steep wooden berm enabling riders to slingshot high around the turn and take the bend at breathtaking speed. The opposite end of the course is kept flat, letting the riders back their machines into the turn and then power-slide out, locking their handlebars as they go. If you plan your journey with military precision, never stray too far from a public charger and are gentle with the throttle, the Zero makes some kind of sense. It’s smooth, accelerates swiftly and is cheap to run (once you’ve spent the equivalent of a Panigale V4 buying it in the first place). Electric bikes may have improved, but for distance and leisure riding they’re still not there. Your range is dictated by the location of chargers and when you do find one it takes too long for it to do its thing. We spent more time off the Zero waiting for it to charge than on it. ‘To understand Ducatis you need to ride the roads that inspired them’ You don’t have to own a Ducati to appreciate how they put their bikes together, and a tour around the factory in Bologna in northern Italy is very special; an experience dripping with racing and engineering history. But even better is a ride on the surrounding roads where these wonderful machines have for decades been put through their paces by the factory’s test pilots. Taking a bike out of its comfort zone is one of the best ways to really expose its weaknesses. At least, that’s what I told myself while I sat planning a trip that’d see me ride the Scrambler 2400 miles to the Austrian Grand Prix and back. The Scrambler is an impressively capable machine, built for Sunday B-road blasts. You only have to look at the thing to know it’s not designed for touring. There’s no wind or weather protection and absolutely no provision for luggage, meaning I simply strapped a 40-litre Oxford roll bag to the seat and headed off into the unknown. 1 A toasty treat Heated grips are a revelation, not just for mid-winter but for those summertime early morning or chilly spring rides too. When choosing heated grips, take advice from your dealer to see if they can recommend a kit for your specific bike. One you’ve made your decision and purchased a kit, open it up and check the contents and read the instructions thoroughly. 2 Whip off weights Remove the bar end weights, these are usually fastened with an Allen key or screw. With the weights removed, check the length of the new grips against the standard ones. They should be the same, if they differ check the instructions to see if they can be trimmed. KTM came crashing down to earth after the glory of their final race podium with newcomer Johann Zarco slamming the RC16 after crashing twice in the Valencia test and struggling to finish a distant 21st.
